A headshot of Iwan Llewelyn Jones

2024 marks one hundred and fifty years since the Russian composer Modest Mussorgsky (1839-1881) composed his seminal solo piano work ‘Pictures at an Exhibition’ (1874). In this seminar, pianist Iwan Llewelyn-Jones is joined by writer Angharad Price to unpack this intriguing work in an exploration of its themes, harmonies, articulations, dynamics, other performative elements and to address the broader context. In 2024, Scottish composer Gemma McGregor was commissioned to compose a new piece in response to the penultimate movement in ‘Pictures at an Exhibition’ (‘The Hut of Baba-Yaga’). The resultant work, ‘In Pursuit’, will be performed by the dedicatee, Iwan Llewelyn-Jones during this seminar.
