Bangor Social Sciences Conference on Intersectionality and Belonging (28-29 June)
On Thursday 28th and Friday 29th June, Bangor University will be hosting an international conference exploring the themes of intersectionality and belonging.
The conference is a collaborative venture between the School of Social Sciences Bangor University, the Wales Institute of Social and Economic Research Data and Methods (WISERD), the Centre for Research on Migration, Refugees and Belonging at the University of East London, as well as the British Sociological Association Social Theory Study Group.
The organisers have brought together a line up of keynote speakers and delegates across the humanities and social sciences. As co-organiser Dr Robin Mann, Lecturer in the School of Social Sciences at Bangor, explains: “Current debates on nation, gender, sexuality and religion often draw on the concept of ‘intersectionality’ to understand how these and other categories of identity relate to each other. Hence who we are, and what we belong to, is both multifaceted and contradictory. We believe the conference will provide a forum for developing our understanding of these issues. It will be particularly suitable to postgraduates and individuals interested in ‘identity questions’, and offers the opportunity to interact with researchers working across a wide range of contexts and disciplines”.
Keynote Speakers at the conference will include:
Director of the Research Centre on Migration, Refugees and Belonging, University of East London
Nira Yuval Davis will speak on “The Politics of Belonging: Intersectional Constellations”.
Director of the Social Theory Centre, University of Warwick
Gurminder K. Bhambra will speak on “African American Sociology: Identity, Inequality and Emancipation”.
