Celebrating 50 years of research excellence

The School of Social Sciences held an All School Research Day last week as part of its 50th anniversary celebrations.

The event showcased some of the research currently being undertaken by academic staff and doctoral students within the school, covering a broad range of areas within the social sciences, including health and social care, language policy and planning, policing, student belonging and social capital.The School of Social Sciences held a Research Day earlier this month

Attended by students from all level of studies, the day offered the ideal platform to demonstrate why the school is currently ranked within the top 20 in the UK for research in the field of social sciences (REF 2014).

Students were also encouraged to engage in their own research by participating in a poster competition, with prizes awarded to the best entries in each of the three categories: crime, criminal justice and society; communities, culture, language and identities; and health, social care, welfare and society.

Head of School, Dr Martina Feilzer, said: “The Research Day was a great opportunity to showcase the exciting research taking place in the School – from postgraduate projects to externally funded research programmes. We also held a fundraising event for one of our research partners, Cruse Bereavement Care, and raised over £500 for the charity. My thanks go to everyone who contributed, participated, and helped to make this day such a success”.
