Summary: Our best intentions are not always followed by good actions. This workshop will introduce behaviour change and consider what drives behaviour and why sometimes our goal setting doesn’t lead to appropriate actions. Examples and case studies will be discussed, and we will also consider behaviour within a system and how systems approaches can support larger scale change.
Workshop timetable:
10:00 – 10:15
Introductions - Meet staff from the ALPHAcademy, and an introduction to the day.
10:15 – 12:00
There are many flavours of behaviour change – some rely on persuasion and changing attitudes, others on goal-setting and conscious intention. The sessions in the morning will explore types of behaviour change,
analytic models and some of the challenges that arise. Within this session we will also introduce a dual process approach to behaviour change, exploring how this theory can be applied in practice. Through a mixture of keynote lectures, question and answer sessions and small groups discussions, we will share our experiences of the application of behaviour change to practice.
12:00 -13:00 Lunch break
13:00 - 14:30
The first session in the afternoon will draw on a number of case studies to explore the points raised in the morning session. The collection of presentations from specific contexts will highlight a range of challenges we face when managing behaviour change. There will then be the opportunity to share your own experiences in small groups and discuss ideas for managing the challenges faced.
14:30 - 15:30
The second afternoon session will start with an introduction to Systems Thinking, and the chance to ask questions.
15:30 - 16:00
Feedback and discussion in the wider group to contextualise the workshop for attendees
