Listen to the Director of the Mindfulness Master’s Programme talk about the course

[0:00]

Hi. I'm Dr. Gemma Griffith, and I run the Masters of Mindfulness here at Bangor University.

[0:06]

So here at Bangor, we were actually the first university to establish a masters in mindfulness program in the world,

[0:13]

and we've been running for over 20 years now. So it's a blended learning.

[0:17]

MASTERS So that means that you come to Bangor about three times a year to do in-person teaching,

[0:23]

and then the rest of the time you can learn online services and a master's that's really designed

0:13

[0:28]

for people who either work full time or part time or have other kind of family commitments.

[0:34]

And most of our students finds that it's it's very much doable in the context of their lives.

[0:40]

But the classes for mindfulness, you have treats that you can choose from.

[0:43]

So one is used to be that would like to train to be a mindfulness teacher to come on that route.

[0:48]

You don't necessarily need any teaching experience or you might have lots of teaching experience of mindfulness,

[0:54]

and we have a huge variation of people that started that teaching pathway.

[0:58]

So you get the full training to be a mindfulness teacher with us and you get a masters degree,

[1:04]

and you also get something called the Certificates of Competence, which is the highest certificate you can get in the UK.

[1:10]

And for mindfulness teaching the other way, which isn't may and mindfulness based approaches.

[1:16]

So that roots is for those of you who want to explore mindfulness personally

[1:21]

in your own class and practice and want to study it as an academic subject

[1:25]

So there are quite a few modules you can choose from a collection of perspectives about that.

[1:29]

But essentially you get a grounding in mindfulness research and we also really encourage

[1:35]

you to bring in your own interests and expertise and experiences into your studies.

[1:40]

And this culminates in the thesis on the topic of your choice as a really

[1:44]

supportive community only masters program that emerges over time with your fellow

[1:50]

students and cheeses so that those opportunities for connection and study

[1:55]

throughout the year and you've got this with the flexibility of blended learning,

[1:59]

which means you can fit this around other commitments such as work or family.

[2:03]

So if you'd like to find out more about our master's program, please go to our website,

[2:08]

which is Bangor Dot, AC, dot UK slash mindfulness and you can download our prospectus that.

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Courses

8-week MBSR courses

If you want to explore mindfulness for yourself, the 8 week course is a great starting point. Due to changes within Bangor University, CMRP are no longer providing Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) courses. We recommend you contact Gwynedd Mindfulness, who provide many mindfulness opportunities in North Wales: their teaching team includes many long-standing CMRP teachers.

If you want a taster of what mindfulness meditation is like before deciding whether to sign up to a course, here are some free mindfulness audio tracks from some of our CMRP mindfulness teachers for you to try.

Distance Learning 8-week MBSR courses

Distance learning is a wonderful opportunity to learn mindfulness one-to-one with a CMRP teacher. You will receive learning materials at home and engage with your teacher via phone or internet sessions once a week. This course is especially suitable to people who may find it difficult to attend an 8 week group course:

  • No courses in your country or area
  • Restricted opportunity because of caring duties
  • Unable to attend a group for health reasons.

This way of learning is also ideal for anyone with a mindfulness practice who would like to deepend and intensify their practice in a one-to-one teaching relationship with an experienced teacher.

For information about Distance learning courses, email distance-learning@mindfulness-network.org.

We offer ongoing monthly meeting groups in Bangor for everyone who has done an 8-week course with us.

You can also join us for a free day of mindfulness practice at various times during the year.

A great option is our 6-week Staying Mindful Course, which has been developed for those who wish to deepen their mindfulness practice after completing the 8-week course.

We have trained thousands of mindfulness teachers and have highly experienced training team. The main routes to training to be a mindfulness teacher are our Master’s programmes and the Teacher Training Pathway.

Compassion Courses

Courses that combine mindfulness with compassion training can help us develop and deepen our natural human capacity towards compassion, so we can be kinder to ourselves and others. As well as equipping us to meet life’s challenges, compassion is also a gateway to increased happiness.

In compassion-based courses, kindness and compassion are taught more front and centre than they are in MBSR and MBCT, and there is more focus on developing these qualities. Our ability to meet challenging experiences with compassion – instead of criticism and judgment – is gently developed through particular practices and exercises, alongside a focus on pleasant experiences and development of positive emotions.

CMRP no longer offers compassion-based events. However, if you are interested in finding out more about compassion, we recommend that you visit the website of The Mindfulness Network.

The Mindfulness Network offers a wide range of residential and non-residential compassion-based retreats and teacher training courses in both:
