Musicology - Analysis
Analysis has for many years established itself as an active and influential research area at Bangor. The School’s Research Professor, Robert Pascall, is acknowledged as a leading expert in the field, and has recently published articles on Schoenberg’s pedagogical writings and the first movement of his Fourth String Quartet for Proceedings of the Arnold Schoenberg Centre, and on Brahms’s Clarinet Quintet.
Prof Robert Pascall was Chair of the Editorial Board of Music Analysis from 1989 to 2002 and was elected to its Advisory Panel in 2002. Recent publications on analytical questions include:
'Theory and Practice: Schoenberg's American Pedagogical Writings and the First Movement of the Fourth String Quartet, op.37', Journal of the Arnold Schönberg Center 4/2002: Arnold Schoenberg in America (Vienna, 2002), 229-44.
'Models for Beginners in Composition - Structural Functions of Harmony - Preliminary Exercises in Counterpoint - Fundamentals of Musical Composition' in: Arnold Schönberg . Interpretationen seiner Werke, ed. Gerold Gruber (Laaber, 2002), II: 446-59.
