Training to deliver the IY programmes

There are a range of different training programmes to prepare people to deliver the Parent and Child programmes as well as a Teacher Classroom Management leader training. These are shown in the diagram above. Further information about all IY programmes can be found at http://incredibleyears.com

For dates of training courses currently scheduled for 2019/20 please click here. (more dates to follow)
For further information about any of the training courses described below, or to make a reservation please email Dilys Williams on d.williams@bangor.ac.uk

Parent Programmes

There are a number of different three-day, two-day and one-day trainings. Three-day trainings are for the Pre-school BASIC programme with a variety of one-day (School Age, Advance and the Home Coaching programms) and two-day add-on courses (Autism programme) for people who have already trained in the Pre-school BASIC Parent Group Leader training. There are two-day 'stand alone' trainings in the Baby and School Readiness programmes.

Pre-school BASIC Parent programme

The training for the Pre-school BASIC Parent programme is three days. The Pre-school BASIC Parenting programme (for parents of children aged 3-6 years) is designed to promote positive strategies and to assist parents in managing children's behaviour problems. This programme includes: play, helping children learn, positive reinforcement, limit setting, non-physical discipline alternatives, problem solving, effective communication skills and supporting children's education. Group therapy process issues such as empowering parents, collaborating, dealing with resistance, confronting and teaching, supporting and advocating for parents will be discussed. This intervention programme is used by professionals (therapists and parent educators from psychology, social work, education, nursing and psychiatry) who are working with families of young children with conduct problems (ages 0-12 years), or with single parents, abusive parents, and teenage parents. The workshop teaches how to use this programme as a prevention programme in elementary schools and pre-schools. This workshop covers the ages 2-8 years. Attending this workshop is the first step in becoming a certified group leader. For further information go to: http://incredibleyears.com/programs/parent/preschool-basic-curriculum/
Cost: £500 (excluding VAT)  Registration form

Home Coaching programme -Toddler, Pre-school and School Age BASIC

This course is for experienced IY Parent group leaders who have already attended the three-day BASIC training and have delivered at least two groups.  The training supports leaders to deliver the Toddler, Pre-school or School Age Parent programmes at the homes of those parents who either miss or are unable to attend a group session. For further information go to: http://incredibleyears.com/programs/home-coaching-and-self-study-models/
Cost: £225 (excluding Vat) to include the Home Coaching Manual. Please contact the office on 01248 383 758 or d.williams@bangor.ac.uk for further details.

The Baby and Parent programme

The Baby and Parent programme is based on the same collaborative principles as the other IY Parent Programmes and includes discussion, viewing video vignettes and practice. However it is different because having the babies present enables live practice. The programme focuses on the child’s first year of life. It is arranged developmentally with the early material focusing on the first three months of the baby’s life and gradually progressing through to when babies are around nine months old. It is recommended that babies are under six months at the start of the programme.

This two-day training day is designed specifically for the delivery of the Baby and Parent programme and it is not necessary to have undertaken the BASIC leader training prior to attending. It introduces participants to the content of the programme and the collaborative process skills by which it is delivered. The core of the programme is a range of activities to promote positive relationships with babies and to enhance their learning through singing, touching and talking with them. However the training also introduces other curriculum components around safety, health, routines and the developmental process. Logistics of running a programme where both parents and babies are present are discussed. Given the health component and information needs of parents of young babies, it is recommended that the infant programme is co-delivered with a Health Visitor. For further information go to: http://incredibleyears.com/programs/parent/babies-curriculum/

Cost: £375 (excluding VAT) - - None planned at this time.

Baby Programme Consultation and Introduction to the Well Baby Programme

Programme Objectives: This programme is designed to help staff working with parents of infants to promote responsive, nurturing parenting that will strengthen babies’ attachment and home safety as well as their cognitive, language, social and emotional development.

Who Should Deliver: This programme with video clips, clinician guide with handouts, and recommended home activities can be used by parent support workers, health visitors, pediatricians and nurses in primary care settings or in the home to support parents with babies from birth to nine months of age. Those delivering the programme MUST have already received the two day IY Baby training.

How the Primary Care (Well-Baby) Version of the IY Parents & Babies Programme is organised: This abbreviated programme is adapted from the Incredible Years Parents and Babies Programme. The Well-Baby Programme consists of one DVD and a few selected vignettes from each programme that can be shown to parents during well-baby visits. These vignettes have been chosen according to the concepts considered most important at each stage of the baby’s development. They can be shown to enhance the teaching of baby development and anticipatory guidance concepts. The vignettes can also be used to recruit families into your IY Parents and Babies groups in your clinic. By watching and discussing the vignettes with their primary care provider or health visitor, parents can explore aspects of the parent-baby relationship and their important teaching and nurturing role in their baby’s life. The IY Helping Parents Promote Babies’ Development

Who should attend: This consultation day is open to all who have completed the two-day IY Baby training.

Structure of the day: The Well Baby programme will be introduced and there will be opportunities to practice and problem solve ways of delivering the programme. There will also be opportunities for video feedback and problem solving for those delivering the group-based IY Baby programme.

Cost: £175 (excluding VAT) - None planned at this time

School Age programme

There is a three-day School Age programme training not offered in Wales so we offer the one day add-on course and participants MUST have undertaken the three-day Pre-school BASIC Parent Leader training prior to attending. The revised School Age Parent Programme is based on the same principles as the Pre-school BASIC Parent Programme for parents of younger children. It comprises a set of vignettes that are coded as suitable for 6 – 8 or 9 – 12 year old children.

Because children in this age range are likely to have well-established problems and also because they present greater challenges in terms of identifying rewards and implementing discipline plans, this training day is offered as a participative supplement to the Pre-school BASIC leader training. It will be helpful for leaders who are working towards leader certification.

This one-day course introduces participants to some of the material in the 12 session School Age programme. The course is available to people who have completed the BASIC group leader training and have had the experience of co-leading at least one Pre-school BASIC Parenting course.  During the day participants will have an opportunity to present parts of the programme and to obtain feedback and support in terms of their development of leader skills. For further information go to: http://incredibleyears.com/programs/parent/school-age-basic-curriculum/

Cost: £175 (excluding VAT) - None planned at this time

ADVANCE Parent

The training for the ADVANCE Parent programme is a one day add-on course and participants MUST have undertaken the three-day Pre-school BASIC Parent Leader training prior to attending. The IY Advance Parenting programme is a follow-on to the BASIC Parenting Programme for parents of children who have clinical levels of conduct problems, are experiencing relationship difficulties with other adults and/or are in multiple stressed circumstances.

The Advance programme covers communication and interpersonal skills, including problem solving with adults and children, anger management and how to give and get support.

This one-day course will introduce participants to the content of the eight session Advance Parenting Programme and is for people who have completed the BASIC group leader training and have experience of co-leading at least one BASIC Parenting Course. For further information go to http://incredibleyears.com/programs/parent/advance-curriculum/

Cost: £175 (excluding VAT) - None planned at this time.

School Readiness

The training for the School Readiness programme is now a two-day stand alone course. This is a four-session programme designed for parents whose children are about to start, or have just started, school. Two sessions explore how parents can support children’s play as a learning activity and two sessions explore effective ways of introducing children to books. The programme uses all of the well-established tools for effective work with parents, including brainstorming and discussion, showing videos of parents and children, using practice activities during the sessions and encouraging parents to undertake home activities with their children.

The School Readiness programme is intended to be delivered in school with at least one of the leaders being school-based. This two-day training is for teachers, other education service staff and for other primary care staff who might be delivering the programme with school-based staff. Unlike the longer Parent programmes, training for this programme does not require the three-day BASIC leader training as a pre-requisite although this would also be useful. Staff are expected to be familiar with early learning principles and during the training will be introduced to the programme and shown how to adopt the collaborative principles that underpin the introduction of the material to parents.

It is hoped that schools will target the parents of children in nursery classes or when enrolling for reception classes. For further information go to: http://incredibleyears.com/programs/parent/school-readiness-curriculum/

Cost: £350 (excluding VAT) - None planned at this time.

Autism Spectrum and Language Delay Programme (three-day 'stand alone' course)

The Autism Spectrum and Language Delay Programme is a 12–16 session programme which is offered to parents of young children (aged 2-5) on the Autism spectrum or with language delays in order to promote children’s emotional regulation, social competence, language skills, school readiness, and social relationships skills. It is a three-day stand alone training and it would be useful if delegates have knowledge of or experience in the Autism Spectrum.

For further information go to: http://incredibleyears.com/programs/parent/autism-spectrum-language-delays/

Cost: £500 (excluding VAT) - Registration form

Teacher Programme

Teacher Classroom Management

Leader training.  This is a three-day course to train people to deliver the six-day teacher programme. Leader training for the three-day IY Teacher Classroom Management Group Programme was offered for the first time in Bangor in 2005, following the successful training of many local teachers, and the adoption of the Teacher and linked "Dinosaur School" programmes by Gwynedd Education Department as part of their Primary School strategy. The programmes have received enthusiastic support from those teachers that have attended.

Teachers spend increasing amounts of their time managing children who display aggressive and non-compliant behaviours and who disrupt both their own and other children's academic progress. The course trains programme leaders to deliver the six-day IY Teacher Training Programme developed by Professor Webster-Stratton. The Teacher programme focuses on evidence-based practices and strategies that have been shown to reduce problem behaviour in the classroom and strengthen children's social, emotional and academic competencies. It is delivered over six days, ideally one month apart. Between sessions, teachers undertake classroom assignments and receive both verbal and written feedback on their efforts.

The three-day training course prepares leaders to deliver the Teacher programme. It introduces the content of the six-day programme and the collaborative teaching style which builds on teachers existing expertise. The training is open to education specialists with responsibility for/experience in training and supporting teachers of primary aged children or others with extensive experience in delivering the IY programmes. Course participants should ideally be familiar with the Teacher programme prior to the course and should be either an education specialist, a qualified primary school teacher with experience of the programme, or a certified Parent programme leader.

The teacher programme is linked to the IY Parent and Child programmes all of which promote positive and effective strategies to improve children's social competencies at school and at home. These programmes have been extensively researched and have been identified as 'blueprint' programmes, meeting the highest research criteria for violence prevention and the promotion of social and academic skills in young children.  For further information go to: http://incredibleyears.com/programs/teacher/classroom-mgt-curriculum/

Cost: £500 (excluding VAT) - None planned at this time.

These days are an opportunity for programme leaders to support one another and receive feedback to encourage their accreditation as programme leaders.
