Join Dr Hefin Gwilym Lecturer in Social Policy for this FREE online Taster Session.
The UK’s newly elected Labour Government promised transformative change, but its first year has been marked by clumsy and cautious policymaking. This taster session examines Labour’s early welfare policy choices and outlines a bold vision for reform. At the core of this vision is a move from means-testing to universalism, including the phased introduction of Universal Basic Income (UBI) and a reformed tax system targeting wealth generated through automation and AI. It will explore how welfare reform might address increasing poverty, strained public services, and the social impacts of technological disruption. By drawing on international examples and recent data, the session invites participants to consider whether Labour can and should lead the way in creating a fairer, future-ready welfare state.
