Overall aims and purpose

The main aim of this module is to develop a greater understanding of some of the key activities and functions associated with establishing and managing a business. The specific aims are: 1. To review the legal bases of different types of business 2. To consider the nature and impact of different styles of management/leadership 3. To introduce students to the fields of operations management and organisational behaviour including a detailed understanding of key developments within the area 4. To consider how change is introduced and managed within businesses

Course content

Different types of businesses, ownership models, legal bases, shareholders And stakeholders, social and environmental responsibilities Introduction to Organisational Behaviour, including psychological contract, culture and OB Approaches to management theory, classical management, scientific management, bureaucracy, HR approach, Systems approach, other international approaches e.g. Japanese Leadership, including power and leadership, styles of leadership, Vroom and Yetton contingency model, transformational leadership Introduction to operations management, transformation process, performance objectives, operations strategy, JIT, TQM Managing change including drivers of change, meaning of organisational culture, cultural analysis models, the role of HR in managing change

Assessment Criteria


Student has scored well in many of the topics studied and achieved the required progression grade and so demonstrated a clear suitability for the next phase of the master’s programme


Student has engaged consistently with all the topics of the module and so demonstrated a high level of suitability for the next phase of the master’s programme


Student has performed sufficiently well in demonstrating a basic knowledge and understanding of a number of topics studied to have achieved the lowest level of pass grades.

  3. 3) Show an understanding of the concepts and theories around organisational behaviour and operations management

  5. 6) Demonstrate confidence in the use texts, journals and related materials in their understanding of the subject matter

  6. 5) Demonstrate awareness of limitations of the fields of study and their application within the practical business environment
