Overview
The module will cover the international ethical and scientific quality standards for the design, conduct, recording and reporting of health research involving human subjects, in accordance to the principles of the Declaration of Helsinki and the requirements of ICH Good Clinical Practice. It will introduce the principles of scientifically robust qualitative and quantitative methods both of observational and experimental design and will discuss in depth issues around formulating a research question, conducting a literature review to present the study rationale and support a research hypothesis, methods of data collection and analysis (including statistical analysis), ethical considerations and reporting research findings. Students will then develop specialist skills sets directly linked to research project area. Predominately clinical based projects will cover issues including validity and reliability. The purpose of the project is for students to develop their empirical research skills – to advance those skills acquired during undergraduate study, and to acquire new methodological and analytical techniques. However, it is not necessary for a student to carry out a full-fledged research study (e.g., a study with sufficient subjects to merit publication) or one that produces statistically significant results.
Learning Outcomes
- Analyse preliminary findings, draw conclusions and produce recommendations for project development
- Demonstrate ability to locate, collect and incorporate appropriate literature and/or secondary data into scientific documents and presentations
- Demonstrate appropriate use of I.T. applications for data creation, collection and analysis
- Demonstrate in depth understanding of research design and methodologies for collecting data
- Demonstrate in-depth knowledge and understanding of current peer reviewed literature and background information covering a specific research topic/area
- Demonstrate in-depth knowledge and understanding of data analysis techniques required to answer a specific research question and/or hypothesis
- Demonstrate master-level writing and presentation skills.
