Overall aims and purpose
This module is designed to enable students to acquire Masters level knowledge and understanding of the field of Cellular and Molecular Pathology. The module will facilitate a deeper understanding of the classical role of histology in the identification of disease and how modern molecular methodologies can supplement these classic methodologies. Students will also undertake to learn the role cell and molecular pathology also have in therapeutic management of patients by studying the role of the discipline in detecting drug sensitivies and/or resistance in diseases such as cancer.
Course content
This module will explore the role of diagnostic science in the identification and treatment of neoplasia within humans. We will also look at the role of inflammation and how this can manifest itself as chronic disease. The techniques this module will discuss include histochemical methodolgoies and molecular methodologies such as immunohistochemistry, DNA amplification and in-situ hybridization.

A threshold student demonstrates knowledge of key areas & principles, and understands the main elements of the subject area, although gaps and weaknesses in the argument are evident. No evidence of background study and wider reading. Answer focussed on question but also with some irrelevant material and weaknesses in structure & argument. Some weaknesses in presentation accuracy & delivery.
