School of Health Sciences
Module - Semester 2
20 credits
Module Organiser:
David Matthews
Overview
The module will provide students with the opportunity to develop data management and analysis; systematic searching and critical appraisal skills. The module content focuses on different theoretical and ontological positions and the nature of knowledge from a range of different perspectives. This is applied to issues relevant to improvement in health and social care and is used to propose evidence-based improvements in health and social care settings.
At the end of the module the student will deliver a poster and presentation relating to two examples of implementing evidence into practice, this will then be followed by a 10 minute question and answer session. All three elements will be assessed.
Assessment Strategy
Threshold
C grade, minimum 50% (pass)- Demonstrate knowledge of key areas/principles.- Have some, if only limited, evidence of background study.- Be focused on the question (assessment brief) with only some irrelevant material and weaknesses in structure- Attempt to present relevant and logical arguments.- Not contain a large number of factual/computational errors.- Describe major links between topics.- Attempt to analyse and/or explain problems.- Be free of major weaknesses in presentation and accuracy.
Good B grade, minimum 60% (merit)- Demonstrate strong knowledge and understanding of most of the subject area.- Demonstrate evidence of background study.- Be well structured and focussed.- Contain coherently presented arguments.- Be mostly free of factual/computational errors.- Include some elements of original interpretation.- Describe well known links between topics.- Analyse and/or explain problems using existing methods/approaches- Be presented to high standards with accurate communication.
Excellent A grade, minimum 70% (distinction)- Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge and detailed understanding of the subject area.- Demonstrate extensive background study.- Be well structured and highly focused.- Contain logically presented and defended arguments.- Be free of factual/computational errors.- Include significant elements of original interpretation.- Demonstrate an ability to identify, develop and present new links between topics.- Include new approaches to analysing and/or explaining a problem.- Be presented to very high standards with very accurate communication.
Learning Outcomes
- Critically analyse and evaluate the methods used to engage with evidence-based research.
- Critically assess and identify the theory underpinning the implementation of, and utilised during, the research process.
- Critically evaluate the reasoning and rationale for the implementation of evidence-based research to inform practice and the outcomes of this intervention.
- Select a critical appraisal tool as a method to structure engagement with evidence-based research
- Utilising an appropriate appraisal tool make critical judgements of a selected piece of evidence-based research.
Assessment method

Description
Quality appraisal of an academic paper (40% of the total mark) assesses learning outcomes Select one of the papers provided (on blackboard) Undertake the quality appraisal using the appropriate CASP checklist tool to critically assess your chosen study

Assessment method
Individual Presentation
Assessment type
Crynodol
Description
Presentation (60% of the total mark) assesses learning outcomes 1,2, 3 & 5 Students must critically analyse and evaluate two research papers which illustrate evidence-based practice being implemented to support and influence change to professional practice. Students must identify what the issue for change is and the aims and purpose of the research. A critical analysis must be made of the effectiveness of the research and its components including the methods used, the models of evidence-based practice, the type and quality of evidence generated, how was the evidence used to influence change, and were there any challenges and barriers when implementing conducting and implementing the research
