Module UXS-3301:
Preparing for Exhibition

Module Facts

Run by School of Languages, Literatures, Linguistics and Media

20.000 Credits or 10.000 ECTS Credits

Semester 1 & 2

Organiser: Ms Wanda Zyborska

Overall aims and purpose

This module aims to encourage an increasingly closer relationship between theory, its documentation and presentation, and continuing studio practice.

The module commences with group studio sessions in which you will prepare a Learning Plan alongside a review of progress to date. The Learning Plan should be designed not only to sustain you through this module, but should also anticipate the longer term aims and strategies which will be required in the concluding 60-credit Exhibition module.

As an integral part of Module 2, you are required to submit the main contextual task of the Honours course, the essay. This must focus on a topic agreed with the teaching team. The essay should relate to your own studio practice with related critical and contextual theory and demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the issues and subject area. It should be between 5,000 written words and not more than 7000. The essay must include visual reference to support your thesis. Please see the guidance on writing tasks included earlier in this handbook; this includes useful information on referencing for text and image to which you are expected to adhere. At assessment, the essay alone carries a 40% proportion of the assessment mark in recognition of the time and work taken to complete the task and your Journal will be included with the practical work for assessment. You will receive written feedback on both the essay and Journal.

The middle weeks of the module allow you to work independently in your personal studio spaces monitored by staff visits. The base studios are generally available during this time for large work. However, you are encouraged to make good use of this productive part of the course and organise your home studio situations, however basic, into a working environment as a test run for later practice. This module is designed to integrate the transition between working in the course studio and you own space as part of the process of sustainable contemporary practice. The concluding two or three weeks of the module are again spent in the group studio with essays to be completed and submitted by the end of Week 7 or as indicated in the timetable. As part of the Journal, you will present a written evaluation (one to two sides of A4, 2 copies) of your progress towards the aims described in the Learning Plan.

Course content

This relatively short 20-credit module aims to encourage an increasingly closer relationship between theory, its documentation and presentation, and continuing studio practice.

Students will be familiar with the reason and application of the journal at this stage of the course but in addition we are addressing critical writing and reflection commensurate with this level of study. During module 2, a relatively short 10 week module students are required to complete their major written essay of the degree course.

In addition, to encourage independent practice in the later weeks students are working primarily in their own environment with tutors visiting at agreed times. At this time it will also be possible for students to use the base studio perhaps for work that requires a large space.

Assessment Criteria

threshold

D– to D+: Threshold Though achieving acceptable Levels of competence and seriousness of pursuit, the work submitted for assessment lacks clarity of purpose, presentation, depth and focus of research.

good

C– to C+: Good The work submitted for assessment demonstrate clarity of purpose and presentation, the research is both focussed and well planned and the project is relevant to the programme of study.

B– to B+: Very Good The work submitted for assessment relates very well to the overall programme of study; the research is well-planned and productive, and subjected to thoughtful critical analysis. Both conceptual and contextual elements of practice are defined and thoroughly explored. The presentation is clear, articulate and appropriate to the subject.

excellent

A– to A: Excellent The work submitted for assessment is outstanding in most if not all aspects. The initial aims and subsequent research, critical analysis and developing understanding all demonstrate exceptional commitment and ability. The approach and style of presentation is entirely appropriate to purpose.

Learning outcomes

  1. Demonstrate a developing understanding of the relationship between their studio practice and its theoretical context by evidence of written work.

  2. Demonstrate an ability to organise their studies – practical, theoretical and research – towards the completion of this programme

  3. Show that they have developed commensurate levels of research, analytical, critical and communication skills

  4. Demonstrate the ability to devise an increasingly independent and ambitious programme of study both for this module and in anticipation of the longer term demands of the final Degree exhibition
