Research Methods for Psychology 2024-25

Overview

In this module, you will learn essential skills for planning and conducting scientific methods in Psychology. This includes identifying different types of experiments, formulating research questions, and addressing ethical considerations. You will also learn how to write a research report, with a focus on the Literature Review section, which will prepare you for your third-year research project dissertation. Additionally, you will be introduced to both qualitative and quantitative methods, with a specific focus on quantitative methods. This will cover the basics of descriptive and inferential statistics using commonly used processing software. You will also learn how to calculate averages and determine statistical differences between groups in guided workshops.

Indicative content:

During this module students will learn about deploying the scientific method in planning, undertaking and interpreting research within the subject area.

  • Designing a research project
  • Producing a literature review
  • Quantitative and qualitative approaches to research
  • Descriptive and inferential statistics
  • Proficient use of statistical package SPSS in facilitating research
  • Surveys and focus groups
  • Hypothesis testing
  • Ethical issues
  • Visualising and interpreting findings
  • Producing a report communicating findings appropriately and effectively

Assessment Strategy

Threshold (40-49% / D- to D+) Has shown knowledge of key areas and principles but there is a weakness in understanding the subject area and research methods. Limited evidence of background study and research. Weak presentation of material with poor structure and little adherence to APA standards.

Satisfactory (50–59% / C- to C+) Has shown knowledge of the key areas and principles. The main elements of the subject area and research methods are understood. Some limited evidence of background study and research. Satisfactory presentation of material with some weaknesses in structure and partial adherence to APA standards.

Good (60-69% / B- to B+)
Has shown a strong knowledge and understands most of the subject area and research methods. Evidence of background study and research. Good presentation of material which mostly adhere to APA standards.

Excellent (70%-100% / A- to A*) Has shown a comprehensive knowledge and detailed understanding of the subject area and research methods. Work shows extensive background study and research. Excellent presentation of material which fully adheres to APA standards.

Learning Outcomes

  • Communicate research information in oral and written form

  • Correctly use statistical measures, such as t-tests and correlations

  • Deliver a cohesive group presentation

  • Design a research project with appropriate methodology and gather data using a variety of experimental techniques

  • Differentiate between experimental designs available for empirical research in psychology

Description

Term 2 - planning of a research project In this assignment, you will write your own research proposal in the form of an experimental pre-registration. Here, you will introduce your research topic, inform the reader why the topic is of interest and worth exploring, before you go on to state how you will perform the research and what you expect to find. You will also prepare and collect some data on your chosen topic within the class and wider on your topic of choice that can be used in term 3's assessment of a research report.

Description

Term 3 - completion of a research project You are required to write a full research report containing a title-page, abstract, introduction, method, results, discussion, and reference sections along with an appendix. Help with writing research reports can be found in the ‘reading materials’ folder and more detailed information about the information required for the report can be found in the ‘Assignment 2 –research report’ folder. You will be given a dataset / will have collected data that you will be required to analyse and generate both descriptive and inferential statistics, as well as a figure to display your results.

Term 1 - literature review Your assignment is to write a literature review for your chosen question/topic. As we have discussed, you can choose the subject that you would like to research and write about.
