Overview
This course is designed to provide an introduction to elementary Mandarin Chinese with the emphasis on developing practical listening, speaking and reading skills. The course will focus on the linguistic skills necessary to cope with a range of daily life situations and introduce students to aspects of Chinese culture. Students will also begin familiarisation with Chinese characters. The module will initially be taught in English with a gradual increase in the use of Chinese. The emphasis of the module will be on communication and acculturation with a view to preparing students for travel, commerce and work in the global context. The course will follow the topic-based set textbook with supplementary material provided where appropriate.
This module runs during the first semester and is aimed at absolute beginners. The course is based on a communicative approach and helps students to develop all the key language skills: reading, writing, speaking and listening. After each of the contact hours, students are expected to spend at least 30 minutes of self-study to revise and consolidate what they have learned in class.
Face to face and online groups are available. Foundation Year students will be registered in the Face to face groups, and they will be asked to complete two assessments.
By the end of this course students will reach level HSK1.
