Overview

Ethical theories and decision making including how contextual factors affecting decision making Introduction to sources of law and legislation Compassionate leadership and intelligent kindness
The role of regulatory bodies, legal and professional accountability and professional standards The duty of candour, raising and escalating concerns and near miss and major incident report Confidentiality and GDPR Informed consent and engagement in person-centred decision making Capacity, best interest decision making and advocacy Gillick competence and consent for minors Protection of liberty safeguards Safeguarding to include child protection and domestic violence Equality and diversity, dignity and respect for the person, their family or carers End of life decision making, organ donation Additional content to be included to reflect topical and student led issues for IPE and those identified during clinical placements

Assessment Strategy

-threshold -C- to C+ Grade: 50 - 59%To achieve a ‘pass’ on the module, students will be required to demonstrate good understanding and some critical evaluation of the underlying principles of reflective practice and the professional, legal and ethical requirements of clinical practice to support person-centred care. -good -B- to B+ Grade: 60 - 69%To achieve a ‘good pass’ the student will be required to demonstrate sound knowledge and critical evaluation of the underlying principles of reflective practice and the professional, legal and ethical requirements of clinical practice to support person-centred care. -excellent -A- to A* Grade: 70 > To achieve an ‘excellent pass’ on the module, students will be required to demonstrate comprehensive knowledge and critical evaluation of the underlying principles of reflective practice and the professional, legal and ethical requirements of clinical practice to support person-centred care.

Learning Outcomes

  • Critically evaluate and utilise theories and models of reflection to appraise how reflective practice contributes to professional development and the use of evidence to support person-centred practice.

  • Critically evaluate the development of moral theories, ethical principles, common law and legislation and their relevance to person-centred decision making.

  • Critically evaluate the requirements of being an accountable professional who is and able to work within the requirements of The Code: Professional Standards of practice and behaviour for nurses, midwives and nursing associates (NMC, 2018).

  • Critically review the legal and ethical rights of patients with diverse needs and how this knowledge is used as part of evidence-based practice to support personal and inter-professional decision making.

This part of the assessment requires the student to: Provide reflective critical evaluation of a legal and ethical issue identified from a practice placement experience. This assessment will require the student to define a topic question, conduct a literature search and provide a critical evaluation of the literature and evaluate the implications for practice. 80% weighting 3,000 words.

Description

You are required to use relevant literature to complete a reflective blog which explores the legal and ethical aspects of the module in relation to the professional requirements behaviour and conduct expected for students and registered nurses in your field of practice. The blog topics will be provided on a weekly basis as part of the post-session activity and you must contribute to each Blog posting using relevant literature to support your narrative.
