About This Course
This single honours course allows you to include a substantial proportion of study in Spanish. Spanish is the major subject which counts for two-thirds of your degree, and Chinese is the minor subject which counts for the remaining third.

Course Content
You will have at least 3-4 hours of language classes each week in each of your chosen languages. Tuition is mainly in small groups and there are few formal lectures. Assessment involves coursework and written and oral examinations. You will also complete a dissertation as part of your degree. Your third year will be a year abroad and involve a placement at a top-ranked university in China.
What will you study on this course?
By studying Chinese you will follow language modules that will build over the years to provide both breadth and depth of understanding geared towards helping students to develop linguistic, analytical and communication skills by both working with others and individually.
For the Chinese component of your degree, in Year 1 you will take the two compulsory modules Chinese for Beginners 1 and 2. In Year 2, you will take the compulsory module Chinese Language Skills. Year 3 will be spent abroad. At least one semester will be spent studying at one of our partner universities in China.
In your final year, you will study the compulsory module Advanced Chinese Language Skills, in addition to choosing one optional 10-credit module from a list including: Press Dossier or Approaching Translation.

Spanish
- Textbook for beginners, A Spanish Learning Grammar (compulsory): £25
- Large bilingual dictionary (compulsory for all students): £21
- Spanish reference grammar (not compulsory): £25
Chinese
- Textbook, Chinese in Steps (compulsory for all students): £15
- Workbook, Chinese in Steps Student's Book (compulsory for all students): £15
- Pocket Oxford Chinese Dictionary (compulsory for all students): £13
Reading material for optional modules (all languages): a booklet is provided in most modules at no extra cost. When this is not the case, there are copies of the books in the library and/or online links are made available (e.g. free online platforms such as Project Gutenberg). When purchased, individual books would not normally exceed £10 (average of £40 if all books are bought for a module).
Necessarily Incurred Costs:
Year Abroad
Students will need to pay for travel to and from year abroad placements (varying according to destination) but will receive an Erasmus+ grant that will provide a significant contribution to travel and living costs during their year abroad. Students in this combination are only required to do 1 compulsory placement for the Major language (although a shorter placement in their Minor language is also advised, e.g. a summer school).
Optional Costs:
Graduation reception (i.e. event after the official ceremony) is free to attend for each student and two guests. Additional guests have to pay approximately £10.

Additional Costs
There are also some common additional costs that are likely to arise for students on all courses, for example:
- If you choose to study abroad or take the International Experience Year as part of your course.
- If you attend your Graduation Ceremony, there will be a cost for gown hire (£25-£75) and cost for additional guest tickets (c.£12 each).
Course-specific additional costs
Depending on the course you are studying, there may be additional course-specific costs that you will be required to meet. These fall into three categories:
- Mandatory Costs: these are related to a particular core or compulsory module that you’ll be required to complete to achieve your qualification e.g. compulsory field trips, uniforms for students on placement, DBS Check.
- Necessarily Incurred Costs: these may not be experienced by all students, and will vary depending on the course e.g. professional body membership, travel to placements, specialist software, personal safety equipment.
- Optional Costs: these depend on your choice of modules or activity and they are shown to give you an indication of the optional costs that may arise to make sure your choice is as informed as possible. These can include graduation events for your course, optional field trips, Welcome Week trips.

- Welsh Baccalaureate is accepted.
International Candidates: school leaving qualifications and college diplomas are accepted from countries worldwide (subject to minimum English Language requirements). More information here.
