The Caban group discusses the Knowledge is Power booklets

The Caban group discusses how the Knowledge is Power booklets can help people affected by dementia and those who care for them

Speaker 1:
When I was diagnosed, if there had been Knowledge is Power, either one, two or three, all of them, I would have had a sense of 1) what was available to me, and 2) what it meant and also for my family.

Instead of being given a carrier bag full of rubbish that stayed in my car and not knowing about PIP, not knowing about disability badges, respite care, power of attorney, all the things that I'd never had any need to know about in my life, and nobody told me about them.
Through us working together as a team, we all had information about things we'd gone for which are in the booklets.
The booklets are set out in a dementia friendly way, with the words, the pictures, the networking pages, and who to contact. It would have made such a difference not only to me but to my family.

It's only recently that Will found out about working with Admiral Nurses, and I said, "I contacted them”, but I was so desperate I Googled, and I found Admiral Nurses. I didn't know they existed, and I found them, and I phoned them, and I was on the phone for hours. But nobody had told me about them.

So it's all that information that we didn't know about, and it's there. Not just for us but for our families and carers, and everyone.

Speaker 2:
Because we didn't know about all these things that were there. It's only through research and working as a team that we've been able to put this

together.

Speaker 3:
How do you feel about the fact that you created it?

Speaker 2:
I'm very proud of it.

Speaker 1:
That's what I was thinking. Proud, yeah.

Speaker 4:
I feel that it's the most worthwhile thing I've ever done in my life, to help do the Knowledge is Power.

Mainly because I know what I went through right at the beginning. And mainly to know that this book will help people through the beginning.
But what makes it so special is that everything in there was put in there by people living with dementia. It was the pitfalls that they've found through their life. That's in there, and they didn't want it to happen to everybody else.

So it's not so much what it did for me. Because it was too late to do it for me. But it's what we've helped hundreds of thousands of people through it, we hope.

Speaker 2:
It's all there in one place.

Speaker 4:
Yeah, in that first book.
