Catrin Menai, Aberystwyth University: "Meadow-Thinking: How Knowledge Disperses and Takes Root Across Forms"
CAInC Research Seminar
How might assemblage, collage, and overlay reshape our understanding of voice and citation? And how are voices and echoes gathered and carried across different forms? This talk introduces “meadow-thinking” – a conceptual framework for exploring how connections emerge and take shape across disciplines.
Drawing on research at the National Botanic Gardens, the choreography of green-hay meadow restoration and broader ecological practices become a starting point for considering how meaning emerges through exchange and transformation.
Exploring approaches to filmmaking and writing, with reference to experimental film, poetry, and dance (including Stan Brakhage, Rosemarie Waldrop, and François Sullivan), the talk considers how we work with and through the voices of others, bringing them into new contexts and forms.
Just as seeds disperse and take root in unexpected places, the presentation follows associative threads across fields of inquiry, revealing a chorale of ideas and their resonances. As Waldrop writes, “Words move from context to context, carrying their shadows behind them.”
Catrin Menai is a multidisciplinary artist working across research, writing and film. She is currently undertaking a collaborative PhD at the Aberystwyth School of Art and the National Botanic Garden of Wales, exploring nature restoration, past and present.
This event will be presented in English.
All welcome.
