International students in the Department of Creative Arts, School of Arts and Humanities, have benefited from a series of cultural visits and activities supported by the Bangor Fund, helping them develop stronger connections with North Wales and the wider Bangor community.
The Cultural Engagement for International Students project was established to support the Department's growing cohort of international undergraduates, including students studying on 2+2 programmes with partner institutions in China. Throughout the academic year, around 30 students participated in activities designed to introduce them to Welsh culture, heritage, music and landscape.
The programme included attendance at a BBC National Orchestra of Wales concert in Bangor, a visit to Caernarfon and Caernarfon Castle, and a day trip to Llandudno featuring the Great Orme and promenade. Alongside cultural exploration, the visits provided opportunities for students to build friendships and develop a greater sense of belonging outside the classroom.
Student feedback highlighted the positive impact of the project.
Yushan Ye said:
The trip to Llandudno was such a joy. With busy academic schedules, it is not often that we have the chance to explore the local area and spend time together as a group. The day gave me an opportunity to pause, enjoy the stunning surroundings, and appreciate the beauty of North Wales. I am very grateful to the Bangor Fund for making this possible.
Sher Yeung Hiu reflected on how the visit inspired their creative practice:
As a composer, the sound of the sea and the scenery gave me a lot of inspiration for my music. It was also a great chance to meet new classmates and get to know each other better. This trip is a great example of how the Bangor Fund goes beyond the classroom to enrich student life.
The project helped international students connect with their local surroundings while engaging with Welsh culture and heritage, enhancing their wellbeing and sense of belonging at Bangor.
Funded through the generosity of alumni, the Bangor Fund is administered by the Development and Alumni Relations Office, and supports projects that enhance the student experience across the University.
