The Reaching Wider Programme
The Reaching Wider programme aims to support learners to access further and higher education.
Reaching Wider’s priority groups as identified by HEFCW are;
-
Young people up to the age of 18 and Adults over 21 living in the bottom two quintiles of the Welsh Index of Multiple Deprivation (WIMD) up to Level 4 learning.

Care experienced learners and carers (regardless of WIMD).
Within the bottom two quintiles of the Welsh Index of Multiple Deprivation (WIMD) we will prioritise:

People with disabilities.
-
People from UK ethnic minority backgrounds.
-
Welsh medium learning, including supporting second language learning and Welsh cultures.

Dyma grwpiau blaenoriaeth Ymestyn yn Ehangach fel y nodwyd gan CCAUC;
- Pobl ifanc hyd at 18 oed ac oedolion dros 21 oed sy’n byw yn y ddau gwintel isaf o Fynegai Amddifadedd Lluosog Cymru (MALlC) hyd at ddysgu Lefel 4.

- Dysgu drwy gyfrwng y Gymraeg, gan gynnwys cefnogi dysgu ail iaith a diwylliannau Cymru.
Our Mentoring Programme | Ein Rhaglen Fentora
Our Mentoring Programme aims to deliver a 1:1 online mentoring intervention for learners from HEFCW’s priority groups and communities, who are currently Year 12 and Year 13 (aged 16-19) in education. The Mentors will be existing undergraduate students studying in Wales.
The mentoring programme is made possible through the Brightside platform:
Mentees will be matched on Brighside’s secure online platform with an Undergraduate student mentor who is studying Higher education in Wales. Weekly prompts will be sent to mentors and mentees, giving them key themes to address. Each week, mentoring pairs will discuss tailored topics to help young people develop the specific knowledge and skills they need for the sector. All mentors are trained and hold an enhanced DBS check, and all messages are sent through Brightside’s secure moderated platform.
Mentees also have exclusive access to articles and activities from Bright Knowledge - Brightside’s bank of resources on careers, education and student life.
Y nod yw darparu rhaglen fentora ar-lein un-i-un i ddysgwyr o gymunedau a grwpiau blaenoriaeth CCAUC, sydd ar hyn o bryd ym Mlwyddyn 12 a Blwyddyn 13 mewn addysg (16-19 oed). Bydd y mentoriaid yn fyfyrwyr israddedig presennol sy’n astudio yng Nghymru.
Mae'r rhaglen fentora yn bosibl trwy lwyfan Brightside:
Ar lwyfan ar-lein ddiogel Brightside, bydd y rhai a fydd yn cael eu mentora yn cael eu cysylltu â mentor, sef myfyriwr israddedig sy’n astudio addysg uwch yng Nghymru. Bydd negeseuon yn cael eu hanfon at fentoriaid a’r rhai sy’n cael eu mentora bob wythnos, gan roi themâu allweddol iddyn nhw eu trafod. Bob wythnos, bydd y mentoriaid a’r rhai sy’n cael eu mentora yn trafod pynciau sydd wedi’u teilwra i helpu pobl ifanc i ddatblygu gwybodaeth a sgiliau penodol sydd eu hangen arnyn nhw ar gyfer y sector. Mae pob mentor yn cael ei hyfforddi ac yn cael archwiliad manwl gan y Gwasanaeth Datgelu a Gwahardd, ac mae pob neges yn cael ei hanfon drwy lwyfan ddiogel Brightside sydd wedi’i safoni.
Mae gan y rhai sy’n cael eu mentora fynediad arbennig at erthyglau a gweithgareddau Panel Erthyglau Brightside - sef cronfa adnoddau Brightside ar yrfaoedd, addysg a bywyd myfyriwr.

Reaching Wider is a HEFCW funded project. Our mission is engage with Primary and Secondary schools, adults 21 and over with no Higher Education qualifications, from the bottom two quintiles of the Welsh Index of Multiple Deprivation. We will also work with care experienced individuals and carers to help reduce barriers to education faced by these groups.

Our mentoring project is aimed at Individuals and groups who live in the bottom two quintiles of the Welsh Index of Multiple Deprivation (WIMD) which is the lowest 40% of WIMD population

Priority will be given to the groups identified by HEFCW which are:

Individuals and groups who live in the bottom two quintiles of the Welsh Index of Multiple Deprivation (WIMD) which is the lowest 40% of WIMD population. Within these areas we will focus on identifying and engaging with;

Young people who are in their final years of primary school through to Key stage 4 (age 16) in the lowest 40% of the WIMD population

Adults over the age of 21 who do not have a level 4 qualification in the lowest 40% of the WIMD population
-
Care experienced individuals of all age groups

Carers of all age groups

Using Brightside’s platform we connect mentees with suitable mentors who can help guide student with their personal experiences an advice on career and educational prospects.

Mentors will provide information, advice, and guidance about life after school, the different routes into careers/higher education pathways of interest (including university and apprenticeships), transferrable skills, and study skills - empowering young people to make the right choices for them in the future.

All messages, URLs and attachments sent over the site are visible to and monitored by the mentoring coordinator, and messages pass through a moderation filter.

Supporting Transition – supporting mentees to increase their skills, knowledge, and confidence to transition from FE to HE through to their chosen career.

Raising learners’ aspirations – inspiring increasing the mentees motivation, retaining learners in education, and supporting their transition to progress into higher education and beyond.

Enhance Educational Skills - promoting Lifelong learning, enabling the mentees to identify and fulfil their academic potential by becoming; confident, ambitious, creative, and enterprising citizens of Wales.

Promote vocational and employability skills – encouraging the mentees to upskill, develop and identify soft employability skills, increase career aspirations, and showcase all opportunities to include apprenticeships and vocational learning.

Promote equality of opportunity and inclusive approaches - supporting mentees with who are care experienced, carers, people with disabilities and ethnic minority groups.

Welsh Language and Culture – by ensuring that the Welsh language and culture is an integral part of the mentoring programme, as the Welsh language is a vital element of Wales ‘identity and culture.
Mentees will be supported with:

Free and impartial advice for future career goals and university aspirations Navigating their post-16 and post-18 options
-
Developing their understanding of routes into a sector of interest
-
Building employability and soft skills such as communication and research
-
Exploring their higher education options and how these links to careers
-
Writing CVs, cover letters and applications
-
Confidence, time management and other skills.
The mentor will offer support and guidance to help them make informed decisions to support them achieve their ambitions.
The role will involve the mentor providing information, sharing knowledge, support with skills development and being someone who will listen. We are looking for mentor’s wo are studying Degrees in Universities and Colleges across Wales who share the common passion to improve people’s lives.

Study skill sessions and bespoke activities

Paid per the Real living Wage £10.90

Flexibility to support a young person around all your existing commitments

In addition to the Mentor training session there are opportunities to attend additional FREE courses such as mental health first aid, trauma informed training, safeguarding and other bespoke training.

Develop your confidence

Experience working directly with a young person

Support and advise from the Reaching Wider and Brightside team

Attend at least one Mentor training session (Usually this lasts for 90 mins and is via teams/ zoom or face to face)

Commit to supporting up to 5 mentees
-
Login to the secure mentoring platform at least once a week, responding to messages (approx. 30 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes per week)
-
Already have a valid DBS no more than 3 years old which has been administered via their institution or commit to having a DBS check which is to be checked before mentoring begins.

Comply with all safeguarding, health and safety, and risk management

Mae Ymestyn yn Ehangach yn rhaglen sy’n cael ei hariannu gan CCAUC. Ein cenhadaeth yw ymgysylltu ag ysgolion Cynradd ac Uwchradd ac oedolion 21 oed a hŷn heb unrhyw gymwysterau Addysg Uwch, o ddau gwintel isaf Mynegai Amddifadedd Lluosog Cymru. - Rydyn ni’n defnyddio llwyfan Brightside i gysylltu’r rheini sy’n cael eu mentora â mentoriaid addas sy’n gallu helpu myfyrwyr gyda’u profiadau personol a rhoi cyngor ar yrfaoedd a rhagolygon addysgol.
- Bydd mentoriaid yn darparu gwybodaeth, cyngor ac arweiniad am fywyd ar ôl ysgol, y gwahanol lwybrau i yrfaoedd/opsiynau addysg sydd o ddiddordeb iddyn nhw (gan gynnwys prifysgol a phrentisiaethau), sgiliau trosglwyddadwy a sgiliau adolygu, gan rymuso pobl ifanc i wneud y dewisiadau iawn ar gyfer eu dyfodol.

- Codi dyheadau dysgwyr – ysbrydoli a chynyddu cymhelliant y rhai sy’n cael eu mentora, cadw dysgwyr mewn addysg a'u cefnogi wrth iddyn nhw symud ymlaen i addysg uwch a thu hwnt.
- Gwella Sgiliau Addysgol - hyrwyddo dysgu gydol oes, gan alluogi’r rhai sy’n cael eu mentora i adnabod a chyflawni eu potensial academaidd drwy ddod yn ddinasyddion hyderus, uchelgeisiol, creadigol a mentrus yng Nghymru.
- Hyrwyddo sgiliau galwedigaethol a chyflogadwyedd – annog y rhai sy’n cael eu mentora i wella eu sgiliau, i ddatblygu a nodi sgiliau cyflogadwyedd meddal, i gynyddu dyheadau gyrfa, ac i dynnu sylw at bob cyfle sydd ar gael, gan gynnwys prentisiaethau a dysgu galwedigaethol.
- Hyrwyddo cyfle cyfartal a dulliau cynhwysol – cefnogi’r rhai sy’n cael eu mentora sydd â phrofiad o ofal, gofalwyr, pobl ag anableddau a grwpiau lleiafrifoedd ethnig.
- Y Gymraeg a Diwylliant Cymru – sicrhau bod y Gymraeg a diwylliant Cymru yn rhan annatod o’r rhaglen fentora, gan fod y Gymraeg yn elfen hanfodol o hunaniaeth a diwylliant Cymru.
