Module JXH-2028:
Prac Water Based Lead & Coach

Module Facts

Run by School of Sport, Health and Exercise Sciences

10 Credits or 5 ECTS Credits

Semester 1

Organiser: Mrs Trys Burke

Overall aims and purpose

The outdoors is a wonderful and inspirational classroom; to lead, guide and coach people in this environment is a joy and a privilege. During year 2, students will learn how to lead safely and effectively in this ever changing and dynamic environment. You will learn to plan and risk assess with client's needs first and foremost in your mind. Using relevant coaching techniques and strategies, students will learn to profile their clients in order to create a safe paddlesport development program. Within a very small geographic area, North Wales provides the paddlesport coach with the possibility to coach on a mountain river in Snowdonia in the morning and then run a session surfing on the Anglesey coastline in the afternoon. From wild swimming in the Menai Straits, to coasteering off the West coast of Anglesey - you will experience how a leader changes their leadership style to suit such environments. Year 2 students can expect to learn to lead on moving water and towards the end of the year will be assessed by British Canoeing Assessors. Students will be assessed on how well they lead their own groups on the beautiful estuaries and waterways of Conwy and Porthmadog to coaching a group of beginners on the stunning Llyn Padarn at the foot of Snowdon.

Course content

Water based II, ensures that all students learn to apply sport scientific theory to their practical activities, ensuring they continue to thrive as an academic, both during their time as an undergraduate and beyond. Year 2 will focus on the further development of practical skills associated with canoeing and whitewater kayaking and introduce coasteering and wild swimming. Practical activity will be supported by classroom sessions aimed at developing awareness and understanding associated with safe and effective coaching or leadership in canoeing and kayaking. Skill development will focus on the competencies required to either lead and/or coach groups in inland and coastal environments. Participation in this module will require a commitment of time and effort by all participants in an outdoor, potentially hazardous environment.

Throughout this practical module there is the opportunity to gain nationally recognised governing body (British Canoeing) awards for personal performance and safety and rescue training, coaching and leadership. Please note that it is not expected that you will do all of the awards listed below, the certificates you choose will depend on whether you choose to work on personal development or coach development. If you choose personal development you will most likely complete one or more 3 Star Awards. If you choose coach development you will need to do the 2 Star, FSRT and register as a level 1 coach. If you already hold a 3 star you may like to consider higher level leadership awards.

It is not compulsory to do or purchase any of the British Canoeing certificates; some students do not intend to work in the outdoor sector and so do not need the qualifications. However, if you do wish to purchase certificate there is a charge required by British Canoeing and this will need to be paid by you. See below for the current fees and the dates you will need to pay them by:

  • 2* certificate, £7 (£6* for BCU members) - as soon as standard is achieved
  • 3* certificate(s), £25 each (£12.50*) - as soon as standard is achieved
  • Paddlesport Instructor Award** (2 day course), £45 registration plus £10 course contribution - May
  • Paddlesport Coach Core and Sheltered Water Training** (4 day course), £45 registration plus £20 course contribution - May
  • Paddlesport Leader Award** (2 day course), £39 Registration plus £10 course contribution - May

*British Canoeing/Canoe Wales Membership is £45 per annum please call Val Ephraim the Administrator at Canoe Wales on 01678 521199 if you wish to become a member.

** Students will be able to do one of these as part of their 10 practical sessions and depending on what personal paddling skilll level they have reached. If they wish to do other coaching or leadership awards, dates are available in late May before the end of the semester course fees of £50 per day will be payable to Snowdonia Watersports in addition to the BC fees above.
