The Athletic Union (AU) is currently based at the Students Union, Pontio and proudly boasts over 60 AU clubs, ranging from hockey to mountain walking to Octopush. It is a chance for Bangor University students to get involved in a variety of clubs, all for free. The AU offers both competitive and recreational sports alongside the British Universities and Colleges Sports Competition programme (BUCS), with your AU having around 2000 members. Sport and Physical recreation are seen as a vital part of University experience and here in Bangor we make every effort to offer our students every opportunity we can to get involved in some sort of physical activity, whether that be walking through Snowdonia National Park or battling the Menai Straits with the rowing club or hosting our weekly intramural and interhall activities.

The AU hosts a variety of events through the year including our annual competition against Aberystwyth University, Varsity. The multisport competition where Bangor has won overall for a 5th year in a row. Other events including, Superteams held in semester 1 and Superstars, another competition fighting to be the fittest male or female with prizes available. Our AU supports ‘Movember’ and ‘FeBRAry’ over the year, supporting breast and testicular cancer research. Annually, we celebrate the successes of our AU sportsmen and women at our spectacular AU dinner awards evening at PJ hall.
Joining the AU is a great way to meet new people, many becoming friends for life. Whether you’re an elite athlete, a complete beginner or just someone looking to make some new and exciting friendships, the AU is the best place to start. Clubs host training at a variety of different facilities including Canolfan Brailsford, Normal Site, Bangor pool and Treborth fields and track. Take advantage of the opportunity to try out a huge variety of sporting activities within a club environment that will make you feel more than welcome to be there. Every Wednesday night, it’s the time for the AU clubs to come together at the student nightclub, Academi. Here all the AU clubs celebrate their match day success and raise money, by the door money going back to the AU club.
