Overview

Daniel is a Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol senior lecturer in Electronic Engineering at the School of Computer Science and Engineering. Upon completing his MEng degree in Electronic Engineering at the School in 2012, he then went on to complete a PhD in the same field, researching Semiconductor Devices for the Generation of Terahertz (THz) Radiation, graduating in 2017. He gained the Fellowship status with the Higher Education Academy (HEA) in 2019 by completing the Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education at Bangor, and became a Senior Fellow of the HEA in August 2023.

In 2017, Daniel was appointed the School's Director of Equality and Diversity, and was the Athena SWAN lead for the School and led the School to a successful Bronze level award in September 2020.

Daniel is now the Director of Student Engagement for the school.

Daniel has been actively involved with outreach workshops and activities at the School for many years and was successful in a grant application to the Royal Academy of Engineering Ingenious scheme in early 2019, and as such was appointed as the School Liaison in late 2019.

In July 2022, Daniel was awarded a Bangor University Teaching Fellowship in recognition of their outstanding contribution to teaching and pastoral care in the University.

  • UKESF Demystifying Semiconductors: Exploring the Technology behind modern Electronics

Introduction. Technology and innovation are at the heart of our world; they are the future. Recent advances in communication, transportation, healthcare provision and entertainment have transformed our society but there are continued challenges too. The underlying reason for these developments is the increased use of semiconductor devices in modern electronics. Inside every cutting-edge consumer product there is at least one semiconductor chip which is essential to their functioning and processing speed. And it’s down to Engineers to develop these chips, design the circuits and write the embedded software code.

Did you know that Wales hosts the world’s first compound semiconductor cluster? Were you aware that the UK Electronics/semiconductor industry is one of the largest in the world? You can be part of this industry; developing the next generation of chips and electronic devices and helping produce the technological solutions needed by society.

Today, we will answer these questions:

    • What are semiconductors and how these are linked to Electronics, Computer Science and Physics.

    • What is it like to study Electronic Engineering/Electrical Engineering/Computer Science/Physics in Higher Education.

    • What is like to work as an Engineer in the Electronics and semiconductors industry?

During the day you will hear from engineers, and interns working in Electronics and semiconductor companies, and from academics and students at our university. You will be able to ask questions and find out more about their work, what they studied and why they decided to follow this degree/career. You will also get an introduction to microcontrollers by using the Grove Beginner Kit. This is yours to keep.

  • IET Openhouse Event 2023

On the 14th of June, the School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering hosted an IET Openhouse event where we opened our doors to the public to showcase the exciting world of STEM.

The Engineering Open House Week is a constituent part of the Engineer a Better World campaign by the IET (The Institution of Engineering and Technology), aiming to inspire children to explore the captivating realm of STEM and explore the wide range of innovative and rewarding professions available in modern engineering.

The event was tailored for children aged 5-13 and their parents / guardians, and we lined up three exciting and interactive activities for them to engage with. The NFI (Nuclear Futures Institute) gave a tour of their brand-new laboratory facilities, and also had some hands-on demos for children to interact with, including Lego Mindstorms and outreach equipment on loan to the NFI from Magnox, and the DSP Centre (Digital Signal Processing Centre) had the participants build their own torches and learn about Morse code, and then sent an encrypted Morse code message down an optical fibre for others to decrypt. Finally, Technocamps had them battle it out as code breaking teams to solve a number of mind-bending clues in order to open a box before other teams, or before their time ran out.

Projects

  • Photo-Electric Light Orchestra

    01/05/2019 – 01/08/2022 (Finished)

    Description

The project is funded by the Royal Academy of Engineering Ingenious Award, in collaboration with the Widening Access Centre, Bangor University, and will work with local school children, aged 9-13 years old, to engineer unique and innovative musical instruments. The younger cohort will develop their instruments implementing coding skills, while the older cohort will develop their instruments harnessing the unique properties of light, using Photonics as the source of production (either an LED or a LASER), with the electronics circuitry then converting this source of light into sound. The Photonics elements will be in association with the world leading Photonics Academy of Wales @ Bangor (PAWB).The project will conclude with a musical performance at Pontio Arts and Innovation centre, giving pupils an opportunity to demonstrate their achievements before an audience of parents, grandparents, school governors, and the wider community. The aims of the project are to enlighten and engage children in unique engineering activities, bringing together multiple disciplines hitherto seen as separate entities in an innovative way, which is a very exciting prospect!Activities include practical Photonic investigations, electronic circuitry design and construction, 3D printing of the instruments, and the composing of the musical pieces to be used in the final performance. The programme will run from September 2019 and end with the performance in Pontio in May 2020, and will consist of two-hour fortnightly sessions being run at the relevant schools by the project ‘Engineers’. The 'Engineers' will be postgraduate students (or individuals who already hold a degree) who will be recruited over the summer of 2019. These 'Engineers' won't necessarily require a relevant background in Electronics, Coding or Music as we'll provide all relevant training over the summer of 2019 before the sessions are due to start. The schools we intend to work with include:>Ysgol Hafod Lon;> Ysgol Pendalar;> Ysgol Bro Lleu;> Ysgol Yr Hendre;> Ysgol Maesincla;> Ysgol Dyffryn Nantlle;> Ysgol Tryfan;> Ysgol Syr Hugh Owen.
