E-Mail:S.Malham@bangor.ac.uk

I am a Professor in Marine Biology in the School of Ocean Sciences. I completed my BSc (Jt. Hons. Marine Biology and Zoology) and PhD in Octopus immunology at Bangor University. Following a Marie Curie fellowship (on oyster immune function) in Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) station in Roscoff, France and a Return Marie Curie (immunology and genetics of oysters) I was made a Research Lecturer in 2007 and a Senior Research Fellow in 2015. I have been successful in obtaining a number of research council, EU and commercial funding.

My primary research is on environmental impacts on shellfish. This covers four main themes: i) Understanding the current ecological processes and functions which govern shellfish health, ii) Studying the impact of climate change on the abundance, distribution and health of shellfish, iii) Quantifying the terrestrial sources and impacts of pollutants and pathogens on shellfish, iv) As a cross-cutting theme running across these areas of science, my research seeks to understand the cascading effects of these drivers of change on the aquaculture industry, and the wider societal impacts on the ecosystem services that shellfish underpin.

My research is often applied science, driven by industry questions. When combined with novel scientific techniques and taking a holistic, multidisciplinary approach, this produces both cutting-edge science and research impact, with direct benefits to stakeholders as well as the research community.

Research Areas

  • Marine Conservation and Resource Management
  • Marine Ecology

Qualifications

  • PhD: Immunobiology of the Octopus Eledone cirrhosa
    1996
  • BSc: Joint Hons. Marine Biology and Zoology
    1992

Postgraduate Project Opportunities

I have a range of interests in shellfish in which PhD projects could be developed. These include water quality, food security and aqauculture. Please contact me by e-mail if you are interested in a PhD any of these areas.

The aim of The Irish Sea Portal Pilot is to test the feasibility of a larger project (The Irish Sea Portal (ISP)) which will provide a platform that can meet the requirement for knowledge flow in order to generate growth in fisheries and aquaculture.

This project will use Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to assist the industry get access to relevant information and research on juvenile shellfish larvae and seabed settlement. It will explore the siting of potential seed collection sites and the feasibility of seed collector deployment within the study area.

    Description

This project aims to take a holistic catchment based approach and produce a 'Best Practice Management Guide' for Stakeholders and interested parties involved with the shellfish beds of the Conwy, Menai Strait and Burry Inlet in relation to pathogen retention.

Our objectives are to try an understand pathogenic, microbial, bacterial and viral behaviour in relation to shellfish

The outcome of this research will provide the Shellfish Industry within Wales and the UK to obtain results of shellfish screening quickly and provide mitigation strategies to reduced microbial pollution in estuarine and coastal waters

This collaborative project has been part-funded by the European Fisheries Fund (EFF) 2012 - 15

    Description

SUSFISH brings together the Universities of Bangor, Aberystwyth, Cork and Swansea and incorporates experts from a wide range of disciplines, including shellfish biology, ecology, physical oceanography and economics. This collaborative project, funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), aims to produce guidelines for future fisheries management and policy of the shellfish industry in Ireland & Wales for the next 50-100 years. This will be achieved by assessing the effects of climate change, via oceanographic models, on shellfish productivity in the Irish Sea and determining adaptation or mitigation strategies for the industry. This project has been part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund through the Ireland Wales Programme 2007-13
