This project builds on a programme called Research Informed Literacy with Language (RILL), which is designed to improve reading and language skills in primary school children.
The programme will be delivered to entire classes of pupils in Years 3 and 4 across schools in Wales. Teachers will deliver short literacy activities four days a week over around 20 weeks as part of regular classroom teaching. The lessons focus on key skills that support reading, including phonics and decoding (sounding out words), vocabulary knowledge, and reading fluency.
The programme is designed to be delivered alongside RILL Intervention small groups.
Our language and literacy programmes are available from September 2026. We are simultaneously conducting trials on each of them to measure effectiveness. The data collected will contribute to our evidence base and guide improvements to the programmes before they are made available nationwide in 2027.
