The Bangor Branch at work
The Branch’s role is to:
- co-ordinate the work of the Coleg at Bangor University
- promote the Welsh medium provision that’s available to students
- provide support for academic staff and students
- report to the Coleg on the development and progress of projects, lectureships and scholarships that are funded by the Coleg
- arrange and administer the Branch's meetings.
The next meeting of the branch will take place on 10 May 2023.
The Branch maintains a staff e-mail list for any matters concerning the Welsh language provision at Bangor. To subscribe to this list, please send a message to Emily Boyman, Branch Officer.
Welcome by Bangor Branch Officer Emily Boyman
"Hello everyone! I'm Emily Boyman, and I'm the Bangor University Branch Officer of the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol. I'm a former student of Bangor University. I graduated with a degree in Sociology and Social Policy back in 2018, so it's nice to be back here! I grew up in a non-Welsh speaking household and learned Welsh mainly through the education system. Undertaking a Welsh medium higher education course was a natural choice for me. I hope this experience will help me in my role."
Modules and courses
Bangor University offers many opportunities for students who wish to study through the medium of Welsh. In collaboration with the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol, Bangor provides more modules and courses through the medium of Welsh than any other university. Bangor also has the highest number of students studying through the medium of Welsh.
The Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol's course finder will give you an indication to what extent you can study your course in Welsh.
Click the link below to read about the many benefits of studying through the medium of Welsh and to find out which modules are offered through the medium of Welsh or bilingually.
The Coleg awards several scholarships to students who study specific courses either partly, or wholly, through the medium of Welsh. Full details of the scholarships can be found on the Coleg's website.
The Main Scholarships are worth £3000, and are available to students who will be studying 80 credits of their course each year through the medium of Welsh and who successfully undertake Bangor University's entrance examination.
The Incentive Scholarships are worth £1500, and are available to students who will be studying 40 credits of their course each year in any subject where it is possible to do so through the medium of Welsh.
Membership of the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol is free of charge and open to anyone. There are four categories of membership:
- Prospective students
- University students
- University staff
Anyone who joins as a university student or staff member will also become a member of the Bangor University Branch.
Language Skills Certificate
All students who are members of the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol have the opportunity to apply for the Welsh Language Skills Certificate. The certificate is a way of showing employers that the student's Welsh language skills are of a recognized level, and that they can communicate and write confidently in Welsh.
In order to gain the certificate, students have to complete and pass:
- A written exam (1.5 hours)
- An oral test (15 minutes)
Language support sessions are available to anyone who wishes to apply for the Certificate. Support at Bangor is provided by the language tutors at Canolfan Bedwyr.
Any student can apply for the Certificate.
Porth Adnoddau / Resource Portal
The Porth is a collaborative e-learning platform. It was set up in 2009 to encourage universities to share their Welsh-medium teaching resources, and has grown to be a focal point for studying and teaching through the medium of Welsh at universities in Wales.
It is based on Blackboard, and is accessible to staff and students in all Welsh universities.
- electronic resources and teaching materials
- a website gallery
- modules and materials
- a searchable portal for Higher Education terms
Although the Porth includes a number of open resources, you will need to register as a user to gain access to some resources (e.g. certain modules).
The registration process is straightforward - just follow the instructions on the Porth's home page.
