Bringing Languages to Life: Bangor University Event Inspires Secondary School Educators Across North Wales!
On 18 June 2026, Bangor University Confucius Institute was delighted to participate in a professional learning and practical guidance event for secondary school Modern Foreign Languages teachers, hosted by Bangor University and funded by the Welsh Government. The event brought together language educators from secondary schools across North Wales to explore innovative approaches to language learning and share best practice in supporting the Curriculum for Wales.
Organised by Bangor University colleagues Nathalie Thomas and Ruben Chapela-Orri, the event provided a valuable opportunity for teachers to engage with a wide range of language-learning initiatives, resources, and organisations committed to promoting multilingualism and global citizenship.
During the lunchtime exhibition session, the Confucius Institute welcomed secondary school language teachers and education professionals to its stand, where staff showcased the wide range of language and cultural programmes available to schools across Wales. Discussions focused on the Institute’s support for Mandarin Chinese teaching, cultural workshops, teacher professional development opportunities, school partnerships, Chinese qualifications, and activities designed to inspire young people to develop an interest in languages and international cultures.
A particular highlight of the day was the Chinese calligraphy activity, which attracted enthusiastic participation from visitors throughout the event. Teachers were introduced to the rich history and artistic traditions of Chinese calligraphy and were invited to try writing Chinese characters using traditional brushes and ink. The activity provided an engaging hands-on experience while offering practical ideas that could be adapted for language and cultural learning in the classroom.
The event provided an excellent opportunity to strengthen existing partnerships, establish new connections with secondary schools, and exchange ideas on how language learning can broaden horizons, foster intercultural understanding, and equip young people with the skills and confidence to thrive in an increasingly interconnected world.
As one of Bangor University’s key international engagement initiatives, the Confucius Institute is proud to support schools across North Wales by providing enriching opportunities that promote language learning, cultural awareness, and global citizenship.
The Institute extends its sincere thanks to Nathalie Thomas and Ruben Chapela-Orri for organising such a successful and inspiring event, which highlighted the important role that languages play in connecting communities, opening doors to future opportunities, and encouraging young people to engage with the wider world.
