Overview

In the first part of this module you will learn about the recruitment processes and assessment centres within the Police service and other public sector agencies. This allows you to learn how to evidence your skills and apply them to the values and key competencies within Policing and other Public sector employers, thereby enhancing transferable and employability skills.

The second half of the module you will learn about how the Police service functions. The module will include a discussion of the key legal powers and policy frameworks to determine policing today. The role that police services play in the working of the criminal justice system is discussed as well as practical policing skills.

The module is structured into two parts: Part I- will introduce students to the recruitment processes within Policing and other public sector agencies. Here students will learn to apply their skills to the values and key competencies within the Police and public sector, thereby enhancing the continual professional development allied to their degree programme. Part II - of the module interprets and appraises the function and role of the police in society, understand the legal and moral authority of the police, the various roles of officers and their duties and responsibilities of office. This will enable students to understand contemporary approaches to police work. The themes below are indicative of the possible module content:

-Recruitment processes within Policing -Enhancing Values and key competencies within public service -Principle of policing by consent, accountability and transparency -The role, responsibilities and powers of a Police Constable -Decision making - What works within critical incidents? -Community Policing -Public protection -Criminal Investigations -Covert Policing

Assessment Strategy

-Threshold - Passable work (D- to D+) Learners will have shown some understanding of the recruitment processes within Policing and other public sector and will have demonstrated a general understanding of how to evidence their skills to the values and competencies framework within Policing. Using limited range reading/source material and identifying some events which impacted upon policy and legislation. The learner will have demonstrated some understanding of the value of the ‘Peelian Principles’ the modern police service but lack original argument in identifying the key areas. The learner will demonstrate some understanding of the impact of the ‘Policing Mission’ has on contemporary police work and identify a number of factors that are the most important with plausible/relevant reasons.

-Good - (C- to B+) Learners will have solid understanding of the recruitment processes within Policing and other public sector agencies and will have demonstrated robust understanding of how to evidence their skills to the values and competencies framework within Policing. Utilising a range of sources and identifying most of the significant events which impacted upon policy and legislation. The learner will have a clear understanding of the value of the ‘Peelian Principles’ the modern police service and provide a thoughtful, logical and original argument in identifying the key areas. The learner will demonstrate a clear and logical understanding of the impact of the ‘Policing Mission’ has on contemporary policing and identify most of the factors that are important with relevant reasons.

-Excellent - (A- to A+) Learners will show comprehensive understanding of the recruitment processes within Policing and other public sector agencies and will have demonstrated excellent comprehension of how to evidence their skills to the values and competencies framework within Policing. Demonstrating breadth of reading and clearly identifying significant events which impacted upon policy and legislation. The learner will have a clear understanding of the value of the ‘Peelian Principles’ the modern police service and provide a thoughtful, logical and original argument in identifying the key areas. The learner will demonstrate a full, clear and logical understanding of the impact of the ‘Policing Mission’ has on contemporary policing and identify the factors that are the most important with relevant reasons.

  • Discuss the legal and policy framework and powers for policing in England and Wales

  • Examine the recruitment processes with the Police service as a profession and evidence values and key competencies within policing and other public sector agencies.

  • Explain the role and position of the police and ethical standards, accountability, transparency and responsibility of office.

  • Identify the structure and scope of modern day policing in England and Wales

Individual Professional Discussion 15 minutes on values and key competencies in Policing and Public sector agencies. This assessment involves evidencing students' key transferable skills and their application to the values and key competencies within recruitment processes within the Police and other public sector agencies. This assessment seeks to develop and refine students' employability and transferable skills within their degree pathway within Policing and public sector employment.
