Preparing for Your Doctoral Viva (Webinar)
So, you've spent several years putting a fantastic thesis together - but your success still depends on an oral examination with people you don't really know. It’s probably worth finding out as much as you can about that meeting! Many doctoral researchers are daunted by the prospect of an oral examination, so this webinar has designed to demystify it as much as possible, and to help you to prepare in the best way that you can.
We won’t focus on the paperwork, rules, policies and institutional mechanics of the viva – that’s covered elsewhere on the RETI programme (Preparation for Your Final Examination), but we will help you to prepare intellectually for the event itself.
This session aims to throw some light on the doctoral viva by giving you:
- A feel for what may happen in the viva in relation to what a doctorate actually is
- An understanding the process of the Viva
- An understanding of the role of the examiners
- Advice for preparing for the meeting
- Ideas for anticipating the types of questions that will be asked
- Tips about how to deal with questions
