Professor Martina Feilzer from Bangor University recently delivered an intensive two-week course on Applied Research Methods for Master’s and PhD Students at the China University of Political Science and Law (CUPL).

Held from 31 August to 11 September, the course brought together Master of Laws and doctoral students from the China University of Political Science and Law, alongside a lecturer and a doctoral student from Beijing Foreign Studies University. Through engaging discussions and practical sessions, participants explored every stage of socio-legal empirical research—from developing research questions and selecting an appropriate research design to using quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods. The course also covered data analysis, data visualisation and the effective presentation of research findings.

The course was warmly received by participants. One student commented: “I really enjoyed the classes and learned a great deal. I love your teaching style,” while others described the lectures as “meaningful and interesting” and praised Professor Feilzer’s valuable guidance.

This was the second consecutive year that Professor Feilzer delivered a course at CUPL. Her collaboration with the University first developed through links established by Bangor University’s Confucius Institute. The Institute is delighted to see this relationship continue to grow, strengthening academic connections between Bangor University and CUPL and creating valuable opportunities for sharing knowledge and research expertise.
