Young Carers Residential Event
Widening Access Centre (BU) and Carers Trust
11-12 April 2017
To give young carers a taste of University life
Prior to the visit the young carers were asked to complete a questionnaire to ascertain their experience of university and if they knew where to seek information to begin a university career: application process, course information, finances, support. They were also asked whether they had often though about going to university.
The results showed that most of the participants had thought about going to university but didn’t know where or how to access the information required to help them decide whether a university career was for them. The responses corresponded with the participants’ remarks on what they hoped to gain from the experience, which overall was, to further their understanding of University life, admission, options, and support available. The participants wanted to find out more information, and experience University life first-hand.
Following the event, the young participants completed a post-visit questionnaire where the majority of participants now agreed with the statement “I am now thinking about going to University”.
Before the visit it was clear that the young people wanted more information about University. Following the visit, the participants commented on what they enjoyed and found most useful:
- “Finding out how to financially support myself at University. I found where to get support I might need in University”
- “Finding out about how to get help at university”
- “Learning I could afford to come, and all the help”
- “Gives me an understanding of uni life”
When asked if participants knew where to access information to begin a university career the response was very positive. Overall, from feedback given both in the questionnaire and verbally, participants both enjoyed and benefited from the event. The event was equally educational but also social, and judging from participants’ comments, it was a success on both parts.
