Aled gained his BA and MPhil degrees studying Philosophy, Physics, English and Welsh at the Universities of Leeds, Helsinki and Cardiff.

Between 1998 and 2005 he was Lecturer in Welsh at the Department of Celtic Studies at the Catholic University of Lublin, Poland, and at the School of Irish at the National University of Ireland, Galway.

He received AM and PhD degrees from Harvard University (Celtic Languages and Literatures, 2005-11).

He joined the staff of the School of Welsh at Bangor University in 2011.

His first monograph was published in 2013: Darogan: prophecy, lament and absent heroes in medieval Welsh literature (Cardiff: University of Wales Press)
