About the Department of Modern Languages and Culture

BA Modern Languages

Through our BA Modern Languages, we offer one of the UK’s most flexible degree courses. You can study up to three languages, choosing from French, German, Italian, Spanish and Chinese, and can tailor your module choice to your interests with optional modules exploring literature, film, performance, history, politics and cultural studies. We also offer many combinations with other subjects, as well as modules in Dutch and Galician.

As well as our main degree programmes, we also provide modules which allow students across the University the opportunity to develop their language skills throughout their time at Bangor via free our Languages for All programme. These modules can be taken for credit or as an extra-curricular option and are a great way to gain extra language skills and enhance your employability.

Our Facilities

We are located at the heart of the university in the New Arts building and have a range of facilities for students to use including dedicated study space in our Language Centre, bookable language-specific resource rooms, a film library and specialist translation software. We also boast a very active student society, LangSoc, which organises lots of language-related social events, and a Language Buddy scheme which brings exchange students together with our own students so they can help each other improve their language skills. Students also benefit from participating in our mentoring project, working with children in local schools to encourage their language learning.
