Confucius Classrooms

Confucius Classrooms are an initiative of the office of Chinese Language Council International (HANBAN). HANBAN is committed to the development of Chinese language and culture across the globe and also serves as the headquarters for Confucius Institutes around the world.

Based within schools and colleges, and awarded designated funding, Confucius Classrooms are intended as local hubs, which can both stimulate and support the innovative teaching and learning of Chinese language and culture across communities.

Each classroom hub is given the freedom to operate according to its particular context with the aim of introducing Chinese language and culture to the children and young people in its catchment area.

The Confucius Institute at Bangor University has been awarded funding from HANBAN to establish five Confucius Classrooms in the north Wales region in partnership with schools, colleges and local authorities.

The schools involved include two local Secondaries and further three Primaries :

Friars High School in Bangor

The Confucius Classroom in Friars opened doors in 2017. However, Confucius Institute at Bangor University has been offering Mandarin classes and activities in the school since 2013. The school acts as a regional hub for teaching Chinese language and culture and we are currently working with the school on expanding the number of Mandarin lessons and developing new and exciting cultural activities for everyone.

Holyhead High School in Holyhead

Holyhead High School’s Confucius Classroom opened in 2017. However, Confucius Institute at Bangor University has been offering Mandarin classes and activities in the school since 2014. The school is the regional hub of Anglesey and we currently deliver two days of Mandarin classes each week. The school also hosts pupils from local primary schools who attend Mandarin lessons and cultural activities in the Confucius classroom. Currently, we are working on developing additional cultural activities with the school and looking forward to students taking HSK exam in near future.

Our Lady’s Primary School in Bangor

The Confucius Classroom in Our Lady’s School opened doors in 2017. Confucius Institute at Bangor University started offering Mandarin classes and various activities such as Tai qi in the school in 2015. We currently have Mandarin classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays as well as after school club and Tai qi classes. The school is very supportive and encourages the pupils to learn to be Global Citizens- being aware of the world, their role in it and participating in communities at a local and global level.

Hiraddug Primary School in Dyserth

Hiraddug Primary School’s Confucius Classroom opened in 2017. However, Confucius Institute at Bangor University has been offering Mandarin classes and activities in the school since 2016. The school acts as a learning hub for other local schools and the community in Denbighshire. At present the school has Chinese language and culture classes running every Wednesday for Year 3 to Year 6 pupils. This year, Hiraddug School is planning to develop an outdoor Chinese learning space where pupils can learn more about different plants and use it for learning and cultural activities.

The Confucius Classroom in Escob Morgan Primary School opened doors in 2017. However, Confucius Institute at Bangor University has been offering Mandarin classes and activities in the school since 2014. The school is the learning hub in Conwy County and provides opportunities for other schools and the community. At present the school has four Mandarin classes every Tuesday.
