Overall aims and purpose
The purpose of this module is to examine leadership and the innovations and issues in the field of contemporary human resource management (HRM). This second year module provides a specialist focus on how people are led, managed and developed in the global workplace. The key aims are to study the key theories, concepts and models that underpin positive leadership impact and to develop an understanding of the complex issues facing human resource (HR) specialists and line managers in meeting their responsibilities for selecting, deploying, training, appraising, rewarding, relating to, retaining and sometimes releasing human resources.
Development of the HR function; Strategic HRM; Human resourcing: human resource planning, recruitment and selection; Human Resource Development: facilitating learning and talent management; Reward and performance management; The employment relationship: grievance & discipline, managing diversity, health & well-being, employee engagement; Integrating HRM: HR as a profession, HR in crisis, manager roles in HR practice; Globalisation and international HRM. Leadership/management development and other aspects of Recruiting, Managing and Resourcing leaders.
C- to C+
C- to C+ (50-59%): Much of the relevant information and skills mostly accurately deployed. Adequate grasp of theoretical/conceptual/practical elements. Fair integration of theory/practice/information in the pursuit of the assessed work's objectives. Some evidence of the use of creative and reflective skills.
D- to D+ (40-49%): No major omissions or inaccuracies in the deployment of information/skills. Some grasp of theoretical/conceptual/practical elements. Integration of theory/practice/information present intermittently in pursuit of the assessed work's objectives.
B- to B+ (60-69%): Very good performance Most of the relevant information accurately deployed. Good grasp of theoretical/conceptual/practical elements. Good integration of theory/practice/information in pursuit of the assessed work's objectives. Evidence of the use of creative and reflective skills.
A- to A+ (70%+): Outstanding Performance. The relevant information accurately deployed. Excellent grasp of theoretical/conceptual/practice elements. Good integration of theory/practice/information in pursuit of the assessed work's objectives. Strong evidence of the use of creative and reflective skills.
Understand and evaluate key activities and challenges involved in developing human resources, workplace learning and facilitating Human Resource Development and the key role of leadership and management within this.
Understand and discuss the various contexts for Human Resource Management and Leadership including; private sector, public sector, not for profit, co-operatives, small-to-medium sized enterprises; and how HRM initiatives can help build organisational resilience
Be able to discuss contemporary issues within HRM and Leadership including; managing diversity, health and well-being and employee engagement, psychological contract, and working from home/ virtual working.
Understand and evaluate the main concepts of leadership including theories, practice and process; cross-cultural leadership, gender and ethic diversity in leadership; and more contemporary sustainability and ethical leadership; and how excellence in leadership can help build organisational resilience.
Introduce, define and understand human resource management and Leadership, their chronological development and key theories and models
Understand key elements of HRM including Employee Recruitment, Retention and Reward, Employee Relations, Performance Management and Human Resource Development; explaining different theories, practices and processes and how these link to excellence in leadership
End of Semester Two Exam - held in May

A short critical essay on a HRM/ Leadership topic that requires you to define, compare & contrast and apply theory in practice. Full details will be provided at the start of each semester.
Teaching and Learning Strategy
Lectures, class discussions and case-studies within a two-hour lecture per week in each semester.
A one two-hour seminar held once a semester; semester one is to prepare students for their assignment. Semester two is to prepare students for their exam.
Private Study (Lecture preparation/ reading around subject (journals, textbooks, internet etc); assignment preparation, writing assignment, exam preparation)
Two hours of office hours per semester, specifically for students on this module - to come and speak/ discuss with lecturer following feedback from assignments (semester 1) or prior to exams (semester 2)

- Self-awareness & Reflectivity - Having an awareness of your own strengths, weaknesses, aims and objectives. Able to regularly review, evaluate and reflect upon the performance of yourself and others
- Leadership - Able to lead and manage, develop action plans and objectives, offer guidance and direction to others, and cope with the related pressures such authority can result in
Subject specific skills

- Problem solving and critical analysis: analysing facts and circumstances to determine the cause of a problem and identifying and selecting appropriate solutions.
- Research: the ability to analyse and evaluate a range of business data, sources of information and appropriate methodologies, which includes the need for strong digital literacy, and to use that research for evidence-based decision-making.
