Parry Williams Doctoral Studentship

This award is named after David Parry Williams (1900-1996), the first Head of School of Music at Bangor; by a generous gift from his daughter, the late Ann Lloyd Jones. For over a decade now, the Parry Williams fund has supported excellent undergraduate and postgraduate students in Music.

Several smaller bursaries of £1,000-2,000 are awarded annually, and roughly every 3 years, a PhD scholarship (£7,500 p.a.) is advertised.

Postgraduate Awards within the College of Arts and Humanities

The College of Arts and Humanities may have a number of postgraduate awards to offer postgraduates to help them fund their studies. Please visit the Scholarships and Studentships page on the central Bangor University website for more details.

Other types of funding

The School of Music has an excellent track record in obtaining funding for research students. Graduate Assistantships

All postgraduate taught applicants (Home/EU/International, full-time and part-time) are eligible to APPLY to become a Graduate Assistant (GA).  Graduate Assistants work with academic staff in a range of teaching, learning and assessment activities to support undergraduate student learning for up to 60 hours each academic year.  Payment is made monthly (approximately £55 per month).

Why should you apply to be an Assistant?

SHES postgraduate programmes equip students with the latest knowledge in their selected field, plus a wide range of transferable skills, and an autonomous approach to learning that keeps them at the cutting edge of their chosen career. Assistantships are an innovative feature that allows students to put some of their learning into practice by supporting School activities, to help develop their personal applied support skills and to enhance their CVs with direct experience to support their future employability.

Graduate Assistants from the School have gone on to work as lecturers and research assistants in FE/HE, teachers, physiotherapists and exercise rehabilitation specialists, outdoor instructors/guides and paramedics.

“Being a postgraduate assistant has been a challenging, yet enjoyable experience and I have gained a number of skills that will look good on my CV. It has enhanced my communication and presentation skills and I have learned how to explain things in a different way to make them more easily understood.”

Rachel Cook , Graduate Assistant 2013-14

What is expected of an Assistant?

Activities that GAs are involved with will include supporting lectures, leading seminars, providing tutorial support, demonstrating in practical classes, marking undergraduate student assessment, invigilating at undergraduate resit exams.

GAs are expected to be prepared for each session by acquainting themselves with the core reading and ensuring that they have the ability to contextualise the material within the broader context of the module as a whole and the lecture associated with the seminar in particular. To this end attending the lectures can be enormously helpful, though this is unpaid and not compulsory.

Application process - Applicants should submit to a Curriculum Vitae and covering letter, indicating their suitability for an Assistantship, to:  Recruitment and Admissions (Postgraduate Taught) at mscsport@bangor.ac.uk by the closing date of 31 July in the year that they wish to commence their postgraduate taught programme.

Applicants should also provide two written references by the same closing date. Where applicable, one of the references should be from a recent employer; in the case that an applicant has no work experience, two academic references are acceptable.

Selection is competitive and may involve an interview. We will notify successful applicants during August in the year that they wish to commence.
