Bangor University signed the Technician Commitment in September 2024. Through this commitment, we are taking action to support, recognise, and develop our technical workforce, ensuring that technicians play a visible and valued role across the University.
What is the Technician Commitment?
The Technician Commitment is a UK-wide initiative for universities and research institutions. It is supported by the Science Council and hosted by the UK Institute for Technical Skills & Strategy.
By becoming a signatory, Bangor University has committed to reviewing and improving the support available to technicians across the institution.
Our commitment
The Technician Commitment focuses on four key areas:
Visibility
Ensure that all technicians within the organisation are identifiable and that the contribution of technicians is visible within and beyond the institution.
Recognition
Support technicians to gain recognition through professional registration and external awards schemes.
Career Development
Enable career progression opportunities for technicians through the provision of clear, documented career pathways.
Sustainability
Ensure the future sustainability of technical skills across the organisation and that technical expertise is fully utilised.
How we are delivering the commitment
Our Technician Commitment Steering Group, led by Dr Charlotte Baxter, brings together dedicated technical staff from across the institution to ensure that technicians are recognised, supported, and empowered in their roles. The group is responsible for overseeing the implementation of our Technician Commitment action plan.
Our action plan
In September 2026, Bangor University submitted its self-assessment and two-year action plan. The plan sets out how we will deliver improvements across the four priority areas of the Technician Commitment between 2026 and 2028.
