The award recognises the importance of communicating ecological science and is presented to an active ecologist who successfully bridges the gap between scientific research, other disciplines and the wider public.

Julia is one of eight distinguished ecologists recognised in the Society's annual awards and prizes, which celebrate individuals whose work has made a significant contribution to both the scientific community and society more broadly.

Commenting on the award, Julia said, "I was delighted and honoured to hear that I would receive this award. The work I do is so interdisciplinary that I have imposter syndrome calling myself an ecologist. However, you never forget where you came from, and to be honoured by my original academic community means a lot"

The award will be presented at the British Ecological Society Annual Meeting in Birmingham in December, where more than 1,500 ecologists from around the world will gather to discuss the latest developments in ecological research.
