Together, we are working to restore one of the most ecologically valuable species in our waters, the native oyster.
Native oysters are more than just a historic delicacy. They are ecosystem engineers, creating complex reef structures that support marine biodiversity, protect our coastlines, and improve water quality. As filter feeders, oysters naturally clean coastal waters, removing particulates and pathogens, which benefits wildlife and recreational users alike. Their reefs serve as carbon sinks, help dissipate wave energy and provide nurseries for countless marine species. In short, oysters are a cornerstone of healthy, resilient seas.
Yet, this iconic species is under threat. Once abundant and culturally significant across the UK, wild stocks have declined by 95% since the mid-19th century due to over-exploitation, disease, pollution and severe winters. Today, native oysters are listed as a UK Biodiversity Action Plan priority species, and in many areas, they are functionally extinct.
This is why our project is so important. By producing 200,000 juvenile native oysters for deployment within the Milford Haven Waterway in 2027, we aim to boost populations and aid the recovery of this vital species. Since 2021, Bangor University’s School of Ocean Sciences has developed the technology and expertise to reliably produce native oyster spat, using broodstock from Milford Haven cared for at our shellfish research hatchery. So far, we have successfully produced and deployed around 250,000 juvenile oysters, and recent surveys show they are thriving.
Restoring native oysters is not just about saving a species; it’s about rebuilding ecosystems, protecting coastlines, and creating cleaner, healthier seas for future generations. This project is a call to action for everyone who values our marine environment.
