Overview

Dr Roger Giddings received his BEng (Hons) degree in Engineering Science and Technology from Loughborough University in 1989. He was awarded a PhD degree in Optical Communications in January 2012 from Bangor University.

In 1990 he joined Nokia Networks UK where he worked as a HW Design Engineer and Senior HW Design Engineer in the Advanced Primary Multiplexers Group & SDH Products Group. In 1998 he moved to Finland to continue working for Nokia Networks, in the SDH Access Products group where he worked on the HW development of Nokia’s first Optical Fiber Amplifier products. In 2000 he moved to Nokia’s Research Center as a Senior Research Engineer in the Computing Architectures Laboratory where he worked on various projects including Nokia’s first demonstration 3GPP system and designing and prototyping new product innovations for Nokia’s Business Units. In 2004 he joined the Nokia Emerging Business Unit as a Senior Hardware Specialist where he was the chief HW architect and designer for novel concepts in portable multimedia and personal communication consumer devices.

In 2007 he returned to the UK and joined the Optical Communications Research group at the School of Electronic Engineering, Bangor University, working  as an Experimental Researcher and studying for his PhD degree in the area of high speed optical communication systems for next generation optical networks. He successfully implemented an experimental system to demonstrate real-time DSP-based Optical OFDM transmission which was the world’s first Optical OFDM system capable of real-time end-to-end transmission at >10Gb/s. This work was part of the European-funded project ALPHA www.ict-alpha.eu.

In 2012 has was awarded a lectureship and was promoted to senior lecturer in 2016, he continues to research DSP-enabled optical communication systems to achieve dynamically reconfigurable optical networks that seemlessly converge traditional metro, access and 4G/5G mobile fronthaul/backhaul.

During his research at Bangor he has (co)authored more than 100 papers published in refereed professional journals and international conferences. He also acts as a reviewer for several leading journals, has acted as program chair and a TPC member for the SPPCom conference and was recently guest editor for a special issue of the Future Internet journal. http://www.mdpi.com/journal/futureinternet/special_issues/DSP_Optical

Postgraduate Project Opportunities

Digital signal processing (DSP) has recently emerged as a highly promising technology for meeting the high demands placed on future optical networks such as high capacity, cost-efficiency, green networks and highly flexible networks. This research area is focused on the application of DSP in optical communications to solve the future network challenges. Our world-leading real-time DSP-based optical communications test bed will be fully utilised to explore areas such as: advanced modulation techniques for escalating the data capacity of a single optical wavelength, driving the improvement in power efficiency at both the optical transceiver and network level and enhancing optical network resource utilisation through network aware intelligent optical transceivers.

  • Destination STEM Research Placement

    Destination STEM placement to carry out projects on Optical Wireless Communications: The placement provided a unique opportunity to explore the field of electronics and communication technologies via a number of practical projects. A laboratory induction followed by training on basic equipment was provided along with material and guidance on the basic concepts of optical wireless communications - utilising light as a medium for transmitting voice and data communications. The projects enabled both to demonstrate their newfound knowledge and improved their skills in circuit design, assembly, and troubleshooting - by bridging the knowledge gap between theory and practice.

    Two days of science events hosted by the University. The School hosted the Joule Thief workshop, and demonstrated the NAO6 Humanoid Autonomous robot and the UR3e Robotic Arm. There were also workshops from Technocamps, the Digital Signal Processing (DSP) Centre, and the Nuclear futures Institute (NFI).

  • 2-day Training School

    Third NEWFOCUS Training School, covering WGs 2, 3, and 4, from Short to Long-range OWC systems. The Third Training School was held at the DSP Centre of Excellence at Bangor University, on 17-18 July 2023

    On Monday 17th and Tuesday 18th July 2023, the DSP Centre hosted a bespoke Training School for PhD students, to explore the latest advancements in short-to-long range optical wireless communication (OWC) systems.

    Twenty-three students from universities across the UK and Europe, who are currently studying towards PhD degrees in subjects across the field of optical communications, were selected to attend the two-day Training School, to learn about our research in OWC systems and innovative digital signal processing (DSP) technologies.

    Several world-leading experts from universities across the globe (including the University of Oxford, University of Edinburgh, Northumbria University, Valencia Polytechnic University - Spain, & University of Aveiro - Portugal) joined us in-person, to present their research in a series of lectures and tutorials for the students. DSP Centre Senior Lecturers, Dr Roger Giddings and Dr Sujan Rajbhandari, then led specialist workshops presenting our digital communication technologies and providing guidance on publishing scientific research papers. The trainees also had the opportunity see live technical demonstrations on our state-of-the-art equipment and get involved in some practical activities led by our research team.

    The Training School was organised as part of ‘NEWFOCUS’; an EU-funded project led by a network of university academics, research institutions, businesses and government bodies across UK and Europe, aiming to develop sophisticated communication systems that meet the demands of future networks. These days, current networks, such as 3G and 4G, are struggling to cope with various pressures, including risks to online security and privacy, demands for faster online connection, and the need to reduce environmental impacts. In 2023, we successfully submitted an application to COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology); the funding organisation responsible for the NEWFOCUS project, to deliver the Training School, to share the research we’re leading and the technologies we’re developing to meet these demands and make future networks more accessible, more convenient and more secure.

    Dr Sujan Rajbhandari, Senior Lecturer and organiser of the event, said

    'the Training School provided the platform for the DSP Centre, students and experts from across the world to come together to share knowledge, establish academic partnerships, and to showcase the world-leading research that takes place here at Bangor University. It was a highly rewarding experience for DSP Centre colleagues to meet fellow students and experts from across the world and has opened the doors for further research collaborations in the future. '

  • IET Openhouse Event 2023

    On the 14th of June, the School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering hosted an IET Openhouse event where we opened our doors to the public to showcase the exciting world of STEM.

    The Engineering Open House Week is a constituent part of the Engineer a Better World campaign by the IET (The Institution of Engineering and Technology), aiming to inspire children to explore the captivating realm of STEM and explore the wide range of innovative and rewarding professions available in modern engineering.

    The event was tailored for children aged 5-13 and their parents / guardians, and we lined up three exciting and interactive activities for them to engage with. The NFI (Nuclear Futures Institute) gave a tour of their brand-new laboratory facilities, and also had some hands-on demos for children to interact with, including Lego Mindstorms and outreach equipment on loan to the NFI from Magnox, and the DSP Centre (Digital Signal Processing Centre) had the participants build their own torches and learn about Morse code, and then sent an encrypted Morse code message down an optical fibre for others to decrypt. Finally, Technocamps had them battle it out as code breaking teams to solve a number of mind-bending clues in order to open a box before other teams, or before their time ran out.
