Chinese New Year Celebrations 2022
To celebrate the Year of the Tiger, the Confucius Institute at Bangor University hosted several in-person and online events, as well as a full-day workshop at Ysgol Friars.
The events held in Pontio, included a performance of The Ballad of Mulan, a one-woman show by performer Michelle Yim of Red Dragonfly Productions. This was preceded by a creative writing workshop by the show’s writer, Ross Ericson, who adapted the story for the stage. The events were enjoyed by the public as well as pupils from Our Lady’s School in Bangor.
Other in-person events included screenings of two Chinese films, The Battle at Lake Changjin and Vanguard. The Battle at Lake Changjin was the highest-grossing film of 2021 and the most successful non-English language film ever released.
The institute also visited Year 8 pupils at Ysgol Friars in Bangor and held Chinese language taster sessions and cultural workshops on Chinese costumes, Chinese dance, and the Beijing Winter Olympics.
In addition to these activities, tutors from the institute also prepared special red envelopes for all students of Mandarin Chinese at Bangor University. Each envelope included a hand-crafted red bracelet made by the tutors.
The Confucius Institute’s online workshops for all ages include videos on Tai Chi, Chinese Costume, Dance, and crafts. They are available on their YouTube channel here.
