Chinese Language Online Courses

HSK 1


The Confucius Institute at Bangor University is offering an HSK 1 Mandarin course via Zoom. This course will be available in 2 x 10-week sections; part A and part B, for those wishing to just take half of the course.

Fee for Part A & B: £60

HSK 1 Part A
Sessions: Tuesdays 10 x 1 hr each
Start Date: 4th October 2022 6-7pm
End Date: 6th December 2022 6-7pm

Pre-requisite: None
Fee: £30

HSK 1 Part B
Sessions: Tuesdays 10 x 1 hr each
Start Date: 17th January 2023 6-7pm
End Date: 21st March 2023 6-7pm

Pre-requisite: HSK 1 Part A
Fee: £30

The first week is free to attend, and you can make payment here to sign up for the rest of the course after the first session.


Course description: This Mandarin course is suitable for beginners willing to develop essential everyday conversational skills and familiarise themselves with basic Chinese characters. The course covers greetings, numbers, introductions, nationalities, professions, daily and work schedules; likes and dislikes; ordering simple food and drink; family, weather and seasons; shopping; methods of transport, etc. Our Tutor will focus on speaking and listening skills and help students learn how to recognise basic Chinese characters.


We expect that by the end of this course, students should be able to attempt taking the HSK 1 Exam. We recommend that at least 2 hours of independent study are undertaken each week to ensure students can keep up with the pace of the course.

Learning outcomes: Students are expected to familiarise themselves with 178 characters and establish a vocabulary of 150 Chinese words used in everyday contexts.


Learning materials: All teaching materials are developed by our teachers using HSK 1 book and additional sources. All learning materials will be provided throughout the course. Please see the weekly course content here

Online venue: Once you have completed the registration form (below) your course tutor will contact you with the Zoom meeting link for your lesson. You will need to register with Zoom for your free account.

An intensive revision course will follow this course in May-June to prepare students if they would like to take the HSK 1 exam.

The Confucius Institute at Bangor University is offering an HSK2 Mandarin course via Zoom. This course will be available in 2 x 10-week sections; part A and part B, for those wishing to just take half of the course.

Sessions: Tuesdays 10 x 1.5 hr
Start Date: 17th January 2023 7.15-8.40 pm

Course description: This post beginners course focuses on developing more advanced speaking and listening skills. Our Tutor will help students learn how to write and recognise basic Chinese characters. The course covers topics such as: asking for help; talking about weather & climate; sickness and seeing a doctor; money & price; daily activities; colours, sports & exercise; and shopping, etc.

We expect that by the end of this course, students should be able to attempt taking the HSK 2 Exam. We recommend that at least 3 hours of independent study are undertaken each week to ensure students can keep up with the pace of the course.

Learning outcomes: Students are expected to familiarise themselves with 349 characters and establish a vocabulary of 300 Chinese words used in everyday contexts.

Learning materials: All teaching materials are developed by our teachers using HSK 2 book and additional sources. All learning materials will be provided throughout the course. Please see the weekly course content here

Sessions: Thursdays x 1.5 hr a week

Sessions: Thursdays x 1.5 hr a week
Start date: 19th January 2023 -7-8.30 pm

Course description: This is an intermediate course focusing on developing more advanced speaking reading, listening, and writing skills. The course covers topics such as: making a phone call, making plans, shopping, talking about drinks, describing a person, describing experiences and events, etc.

We expect that by the end of this course, students should be able to attempt taking the HSK 3 Exam. We recommend that at least 4 hours of independent study are undertaken each week to ensure students can keep up with the pace of the course.

Learning outcomes: Students are expected to familiarise themselves with 623 characters and establish a vocabulary of 600 Chinese words used in everyday contexts. Conduct more complex conversations in Mandarin.

Learning materials: All teaching materials are developed by our teachers using HSK 3 book and additional sources. All learning materials will be provided throughout the course.

Course description
: This course focuses on developing more advanced speaking reading, listening, and writing skills. The course covers a total of 20 topics and includes 100 key grammatical points and sentence structure.
We expect that by the end of this course, students should be able to attempt taking the HSK 4 Exam. We recommend that at least 6 hours of independent study be undertaken each week to ensure students can keep up with the pace of the course.

Learning outcomes: Students are expected to familiarise themselves with 1200 Chinese characters or words used in everyday contexts, understand the grammar structure, conduct more complex conversations and have broader communication in Mandarin.

: All teaching materials are developed by our teachers using HSK 4 book and additional sources. All learning materials will be provided throughout the course.

Sessions: Twice a week: Tuesday and Friday x 1.5 hr
Start date: 17th January 2023 -7-8.30 pm

Course description: This course focuses on developing more advanced speaking reading, listening, and writing skills. The course covers a total of 36 topics, such as understanding life; talking about past and present; listening to and understanding stories/anecdotes, etc. Embedded in those topic-related expressions are over 100 grammatical points.

We expect that by the end of this course, students should be able to attempt taking the HSK 5 Exam. We recommend that at least 6 hours of independent study be undertaken each week to ensure students can keep up with the pace of the course.

For those of you who are perhaps interested in continuing your studies in China, we would like to note that HSK 5 exam is currently a pre-requisite for applications to enrol for a master’s degree at Chinese University


Learning outcomes: Students are expected to familiarise themselves with 2500 Chinese characters or words used in everyday contexts and to conduct more complex verbal communications. Students are also expected to read and write complex sentences and articles, as well as be able to do some translation.

Learning materials: All teaching materials are developed by our teachers using HSK 5 book and additional sources. All learning materials will be provided throughout the course.
