Languages, Literatures and Linguistics

3-year PhD position in Spatial Cognition in STEM Learning at the Department of Linguistics, School of Languages, Literatures, Linguistics and Media, Bangor University

The Department of Linguistics at Bangor University, Wales, UK and the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network (MSCA-ITN) project SellSTEM offers an Early Stage Researcher (ESR and PhD Student) position within the doctoral program for a PhD in Linguistics at Bangor University.

Thesis project: Examining language as a medium of representation in relation to STEM learning tasks and spatial ability

Background: The ESR in this project will use Cognitive Discourse Analysis (CODA; Tenbrink, 2020) to study the role of spatial ability in mental representations of STEM tasks. For example, children with low spatial abilities may struggle to understand the concept of ‘volume’. The way they talk about STEM learning tasks involving volume will reflect what exactly these difficulties are and what is being misunderstood. Such insights inform the design of classroom activities to help children overcome these difficulties.

Start: September 2021
Deadline for applications: 17:00 CET, 17 March 2021.

Fully Funded PhD Studentship in Bilingualism: Language Development in Welsh-English Bilingual Children with Down Syndrome and Autism (supported by the ESRC Doctoral Training Partnership for Wales - Wales DTP).

Down syndrome is the most common neurodevelopmental disorder, and a substantial proportion of children with DS also meet the clinical criteria for autism. A number of these children receive exposure to two languages, but there is little research on language abilities in these populations. Focussing on Welsh-English bilinguals, the project aims to fill this gap, by testing language in children with dual diagnosis in comparison with children with single diagnosis (Down syndrome only/ autism only).

Fully funded 3 (or 4 year 1+3) PhD studentship available.
Start: October 2021
Closing date for applications: Wednesday, 03 February 2021 (12pm GMT)

Determining the agronomic and environmental impacts of organic products from agricultural and urban waste streams

Funding status: Fully funded PhD studentship

Whilst many EU countries, e.g. the UK, DK and NL, have developed sophisticated manure nutrient recommendation systems, there is insufficient evidence about the agronomic and environmental effects of new bio-based products, including modified products to reduce environmental losses, for their inclusion in such decision support systems. There is a growing need to assess the wider implications of using new and existing bio-based products, and develop technologies that enhance their nutrient use efficiencies but reduce their environmental impact.

This is a fully funded project, to submit an expression of interest and apply please email Prof. David Chadwick. Further information here.

Graduate Assistantships

All postgraduate taught applicants (Home/EU/International, full-time and part-time) are eligible to APPLY to become a Graduate Assistant (GA).  Graduate Assistants are paid to work with academic staff in a range of teaching, learning and assessment activities to support undergraduate student learning for up to 60 hours each academic year.

Why should you apply to be an Assistant?

SHES postgraduate programmes equip students with the latest knowledge in their selected field, plus a wide range of transferable skills, and an autonomous approach to learning that keeps them at the cutting edge of their chosen career. Assistantships are an innovative feature that allows students to put some of their learning into practice by supporting School activities, to help develop their personal applied support skills and to enhance their CVs with direct experience to support their future employability.

Graduate Assistants from the School have gone on to work as lecturers and research assistants in FE/HE, teachers, physiotherapists and exercise rehabilitation specialists, outdoor instructors/guides and paramedics.

“ A Graduate Assistantship provides the opportunity to place your own input and ideas into modules while gaining valuable experience in teaching, marking and helping out in the [physiology] labs. Most importantly an Assistant gains vital skills for a future career in sport and exercise science.”

Ben Price, MSc Applied Sport Science, Graduate Assistant

What is expected of an Assistant?

Activities that GAs are involved with will include supporting lectures, leading seminars, providing tutorial support, demonstrating in practical classes, marking undergraduate student assessment, invigilating at undergraduate resit exams.

GAs are expected to be prepared for each session by acquainting themselves with the core reading and ensuring that they have the ability to contextualise the material within the broader context of the module as a whole and the lecture associated with the seminar in particular. To this end attending the lectures can be enormously helpful, though this is unpaid and not compulsory.

Application process - Applicants should submit to a Curriculum Vitae, covering letter and a reference (ideally from a recent employer but an academic reference is acceptable), indicating their suitability for an Assistantship, to Dr Ant Blanchfield a.w.blanchfield@bangor.ac.uk by the closing date of the end of Welcome Week each year.

Selection is competitive and may involve an interview which will be in the first few weeks of semester 1. Please contact Dr Blanchfield for more information.
