Scholarships, Studentships and Bursaries are funded by both the University and our individual academic schools. In addition the International Education Centre also supports international students through a range of awards for international students. Numerous other sources of external funding are also available.
As you would expect from a university that places great emphasis on student support, Bangor is keen to offer extra help to students. Bursaries and scholarships worth over £3.7M are available for new and returning students.

Alumni Bangor Fund Studentship 2022
We are pleased to announce the launch of Alumni Bangor Fund Studentships for 2022-23. This unique opportunity is a competition funded through an award from the Bangor Fund which is supported through donations from the University’s alumni. The Alumni Bangor Fund Studentships offers additional support to help cover the tuition fees (inc. bench fees) of self-funding Postgraduate Researchers.(1) This competition is designed to celebrate those who have attained a high level of academic excellence in their studies and who have also enriched the Bangor student experience during their first and/or second years of registration as Postgraduate Researchers.(2) This contribution should be in the following areas:
- Academic Excellence: e.g.
Evidence of distinction for 1st-year researchers might include achievements towards: research outcomes; fieldwork/placement record; research symposia organisation; awards; literature review or academic book reviewing; research dissemination; funding initiatives; innovative exploitation of research-linked media, etc.
Evidence of distinction for 2nd-year researchers might include achievements in: research publications, dissemination of research; gaining of awards; research outcomes; fieldwork/placement record; research symposia organisation; awards; literature review or academic book reviewing; research dissemination; funding initiatives; innovative exploitation of research-linked media.
- University Contribution of Distinction: actively participating in and enhancing the Bangor academic community by showing a strong commitment through, e.g.: student mentoring and peer guiding; acting as a Postgraduate representative for university groups and committees; management of Postgraduate societies and participation in Student Union; university recruitment activities etc.
Only Postgraduate Researchers in their first or second years of registration may apply to this competition and the successful applicants will have their fees paid by the Bangor Fund. This payment will include refunds for the past registration period as a postgraduate researcher for their present programme and amount to a maximum of three years (or part-time equivalent) of the applicant’s postgraduate researcher’s registration at Bangor. This competition will only be advertised for the academic session 2022-23 and all applications must include endorsements from candidates’ supervisors.
CORE CONDITIONS:
- The awards are reserved solely for Bangor Postgraduate Researchers in their first or second years of registration (or the equivalent for part-time postgraduate researchers) who have fees to pay which are not covered by an external funder or an existing Bangor University funded scholarship.
- Deferring students will be unable to defer scholarship awards.
- Both part-time and full-time Postgraduate Researchers are eligible to enter these competitions.
- Awards will be made for a maximum period of 3 years (or equivalent for part-time Postgraduate Researchers).
- Recipients will not be eligible to receive any other Bangor University award or fee waiver.
- Recipients will be expected to become scholarship ambassadors, contributing to BU promotion both as students and in later years as alumni. In each year of the award, recipients are required to make a short video (max. 5 mins) reviewing their career and experiences at Bangor.
- If successful candidates for this award choose to leave Bangor University before they have completed the course, they may not draw any unspent monies from this award after the termination of studies.
Number and Value of Award:
Number: 7 (2 per College and 1 Welsh-medium award)
Award: payment of the Postgraduate Research tuition fees and bench fees during three years of PGR BU registration.(3) (Each college will have an initial selection panel for applications, see below)
Additional Bursary for Award-holders: bursary to the max. value of £1000 during the period of the award (3 years) solely for the following expenses: required fieldwork; publication of research; archival visits. (administered by Doctoral School in liaison with Bangor University Development & Alumni Relations Office).
Application Process: applicants are required to complete a submission which includes only the following elements:
a) applicant will need to state the first day of their Bangor University registration period and any applicant who is NOT in their first or second year of registration is ineligible for this competition.
b) max. 600-word statement of the applicant’s significant contribution to Bangor University culture. It should be clearly signalled whether an achievement relates to the first or second year of registration. Where the achievement relates to both years of registration, this should also be stated
c) max. 300-word endorsement from a member of Bangor University’s academic staff covering both the applicant’s statement and the member of staff’s assessment of the applicant meeting the criteria of academic excellence.
d) applications should be submitted to the appropriate portal available on the Bangor University Doctoral School site.

Footnotes:
1. Those postgraduate researchers who already have these fees paid in full by an external funder or a Bangor University studentship are ineligible to enter this competition. Those postgraduate researchers who are in receipt of partial funding for their fees payments may enter this competition to apply for financial support for the remainder of their unfunded fees.
2.NB: Postgraduate Researchers are only eligible for this competition if they have NOT already begun a third year of registration by the closing date (1st June 2022) on their present programme.
3.Payment of fees will be calculated in accordance with the registration status (full-time, part-time etc.) of successful applicants. This payment will include, as appropriate: bench fees (where required by PhD programme); and ‘research and training support fee’ as required for postgraduate researchers in the Bangor Business School.
