Clearing Information for Parents and Guardians

If your Young Person is entering, or might be entering, Clearing – first things first: don’t panic. Clearing has changed significantly in recent years and is now a structured and positive route into higher education. It’s no longer a last-minute scramble, but an opportunity for Young People to find the right course at the right university.

Here's everything Parents and Guardians need to know about Clearing 2025 at Bangor University.

What is Clearing?

Clearing at Bangor University is a valuable opportunity for your Young Person to secure a university place for September 2025. It’s available to those who:

  • Have changed their mind about their course or university
  • Are applying for the first time later in the cycle
  • Did better than expected and want to explore alternative courses
  • Didn’t receive offers from their original university choices
  • Didn’t meet the required grades for their firm or insurance choices

Clearing is a flexible and accessible way for Young People to make an informed choice about where and what they want to study.

Clearing 2025 Key Dates & Timeline

Awareness phase: Clearing is not yet open, but it’s a great time to talk with your Young Person about their options. Encourage them to explore universities that align with their interests, values, and career goals.

  • Clearing officially opens.
  • If your Young Person already has their results (from previous years), they can apply directly through Clearing during this period – even if they haven’t previously applied via UCAS.
  • If your Young Person is waiting for their results, they can register their interest in a course. Bangor University will contact them after results are released.
  • If your Young Person is not holding any offers, or did not meet the conditions of their firm and insurance choice, they will automatically enter Clearing.
  • If your Young Person wants to change their course or university, they can enter Clearing by logging into their UCAS account and click on the ‘Decline my place’ button.
  • They can then contact Bangor University directly. Some courses are filled on a first-come, first-served basis, so encourage them to act promptly.
  • Once your Young Person has received a verbal offer from a university, they will be able to add their choice into their UCAS Hub account from 1pm (14 August, JCQ results day) or at 10am (5 August, SQA results day).

What You Can Do Now

As a Parent or Guardian, your support and reassurance are crucial. You may already have a sense of how your Young Person is feeling about their results and choices.

  • Talk to your Young Person about what matters most to them in a university – location, teaching quality, student support, course content, etc.
  • Explore the subject areas and courses available at Bangor University.
  • Encourage them to register their interest in Clearing early, so they’re ready to act on Results Day.

On A-level Results Day, if your Young Person decides to enter Clearing:

  • They’ll need to log into their UCAS account and see if they are holding any offers, if they’re not holding any offer they will automatically be entered into Clearing. If they want to change their mindm they can decline their place to enter Clearing.
  • Once in Clearing, they can call Bangor University to discuss available options.
  • They’ll need to have the following details ready:
    • UCAS ID number
    • Full name, date of birth, and address
    • A-level (or equivalent) results
    • GCSE results (in some cases)

The call is quick and supportive — most Young People will receive an offer within 5–10 minutes.

  • If you apply through Clearing for a course that's based at our Bangor campus, you are guaranteed a place in University accommodation as long as you choose Bangor through UCAS by Thursday, 28 August, and book your place in halls by Monday, 1 September.
  • Campus Visit Opportunity: We’re holding an Open Day on Saturday 17 August. You and your Young Person are warmly invited to come and explore our beautiful North Wales campus. If applying after this date, please ask about additional Clearing visit opportunities.

Clearing is not a step backward — it’s a way forward. Your calm encouragement and practical support can make all the difference. Whether your Young Person is feeling uncertain or excited, knowing that you’re on their side will give them the confidence they need to make informed decisions.
