Overall aims and purpose
The aim of the module is to provide students with an opportunity to communicate their proposed research and to develop their appreciation of conceptual, methodological and research-related issues in the context of their own project. It requires a presentation of a research proposal, participation in a colloquium setting with other research students and staff, and submission of a written piece of work.
Introduction to Research Colloquium and assessment.
Workshops/Colloquia relevant to student research topic in Business and Management area held on weekly basis (student must attend at least five research colloquia per semester). The Business School operates two seminar series (i) Business, Management and Marketing; and (ii) Accounting, Banking, Economics and Finance.
Students are required to attend these seminar series.
Satisfactory standard (50-59%): No major omissions or inaccuracies in the deployment of information/skills. Some grasp of theoretical/conceptual/practical elements. Integration of theory/practice/information present intermittently in pursuit of the assessed work's objectives.
Excellent Standard (70%+): An outstanding performance, exceptionally able. The relevant information accurately deployed. Excellent grasp of theoretical/conceptual/practical elements. Good integration of theory/practice/information in pursuit of the assessed work's objectives. Strong evidence of the use of creative and reflective skills.
Average Standard (60-64%): Much of the relevant information and skills mostly accurately deployed. Adequate grasp of theoretical/conceptual/practical elements. Fair integration of theory/practice/information in the pursuit of the assessed work's objectives. Some evidence of the use of creative and reflective skills.
High Standard (65-69%): Very good performance. Most of the relevant information accurately deployed. Good grasp of theoretical/conceptual/practical elements Good integration of theory/practice/information in pursuit of the assessed work's objectives. Evidence of the use of creative and reflective skills.
Understand and appreciate the relevance of the specific research area to current developments in business and management.
Demonstrate reflective learning skills based on personal and peer work through attendance at the school seminar series.
Critically appraise the contribution and methodological rigour of their personal and peer research within the Business and Management discipline.
Summarise and present an overview of the proposed research project.

Teaching and Learning Strategy
Reading time, preparing, and taking assessments.
1 hour per week per semester for colloquia with additional hours for seminar series. The module consists of delivering a research seminar and attending the series of school colloquia. In addition students will attend a preliminary introductory session on the organisation and assessment of the module. Staff attend the research seminars and therefore input into the feedback given to students. Supervisors also chair each of the sessions and provide input and feedback. Two additional staff members run the module and provide students with guidance and support throughout each semester covering the basic running of the module.
Six meetings with assigned supervisor to gain guidance and feedback on the development of the presentation. Two meetings to discuss progress on learning log and assist student with developing reflective learning skills. Two meetings to discuss how to discuss others research and reflect on work in the field.
2 hour lecture in semester 1 (week 15) to introduce the module

- Research: the ability to analyse and evaluate a range of business data, sources of information and appropriate methodologies, which includes the need for strong digital literacy, and to use that research for evidence-based decision-making.
