Overview

Indicative list: The module includes lectures on: how to classifiy different types of urban forestry; Urban ecology and ecosystem services; relationships between Urban greening and wellbeing; Urban forestry management and planning; Detailed case study analysis and the role of urban forests in future cities. The module will draw on both temperate and tropical examples and will involve guest lectures from current practioners. Students will be involved in formative coursework (including presentations) throughout the module.

Assessment Strategy

-threshold -Grades D- to D+. Students are able to present basic arguments for and against particular approaches to planting trees in cities derived primarily from lecture presentations. They can demonstrate basic evidence of reading around the subject and can apply basic urban forestry principles in design and planning. -good -Grade C- to B+. Students are able to present reasoned arguments for and against particular approaches to planting trees in cities. They can demonstrate reasonable evidence of reading around the subject and can demonstrate some understanding the implications for the application of urban forestry principles in design and planning. -excellent -Grade A- and above. Students are able to present well reasoned arguments for and against particular approaches to planting trees in cities. They can demonstrate clear evidence of wide reading around the subject and evidence this comprehension in assessments designed to explore their knowledge associated with the application of urban forestry principles in design and planning.

Learning Outcomes

• Be able to identify and classify different types of urban forestry.

• Critically analyse the degree to which urban environments can adapt to changing climates and other stressors the expansion of green infrastructure

• Identify how the benefits of urban forestry can be measured and assess the implications of this for future urban forest design

• Students will have developed the ability to evaluate how principles of urban forestry enable positive social and environmental outcomes in urban environments
