Module ICE-1854:
Tech Skills 1b

Sgiliau Technoleg 1b 2025-26
ICE-1854
2025-26
Ysgol Cyfrifiadureg a Pheirianneg
Modiwl - Semester 1 a 2
20 credits
Module Organiser: Aled Williams
Overview

This module aims to achieve two main goals. Firstly, it aims to introduce you to Arduino, which is an open-source electronic platform consisting of easy-to-use hardware and software. You will develop their basic knowledge and understanding of this programmable electronic hardware and software system, including several common input and output components and coding aspects. Online guidance, tasks, and extension activities will be provided for you to support their learning.

Secondly, this module aims to help you deepen your understanding of the application of digital graphics techniques in design communication, using software such as Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign. You will be given the opportunity to explore various tools and techniques to create professional designs for different purposes. Together, these two components will equip you with a diverse set of skills and knowledge to effectively respond to various design briefs and challenges

Students will follow a number of design tasks which use the Arduino hardware and software. The tasks will introduce the students to common input and output devices. Students will manipulate existing code.

Each week, students will be assigned online tasks designed to help them develop their knowledge and skills in the use of Adobe Creative Cloud applications such as Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign. These tasks will be supported by weekly online tutorials, which will include extension activities to reinforce students' learning. Additionally, face-to-face tutorials will be timetabled to provide further support and guidance. In Photoshop, students will concentrate on developing photo manipulation techniques. In Illustrator, they will be able to create 2D designs incorporating shape and colour manipulation. Within InDesign, students will learn how to set up documents that incorporate images and text.

Assessment Strategy

-excellent -A- to A+ (70%+): Outstanding Performance. The relevant information accurately deployed. Excellent grasp of theoretical/conceptual/practice elements. Good integration of theory/practice/information in pursuit of the assessed work's objectives. Strong evidence of the use of creative and reflective skills.

-good -B- to B+ (60-69%): Very good performance Most of the relevant information accurately deployed. Good grasp of theoretical/conceptual/practical elements. Good integration of theory/practice/information in pursuit of the assessed work's objectives. Evidence of the use of creative and reflective skills.

-another level-C- to C+ (50-59%): Much of the relevant information and skills mostly accurately deployed. Adequate grasp of theoretical/conceptual/practical elements. Fair integration of theory/practice/information in the pursuit of the assessed work's objectives. Some evidence of the use of creative and reflective skills.

-threshold -D- to D+ (40-49%): No major omissions or inaccuracies in the deployment of information/skills. Some grasp of theoretical/conceptual/practical elements. Integration of theory/practice/information present intermittently in pursuit of the assessed work's objectives.
