Overview

Becoming an effective strength and conditioning practitioner requires the development of theoretical knowledge from anatomy, physiology and biomechanics and the application of this theory in developing a practical skillset. The module will provide students with a mix of lectures and seminars to gain contemporary knowledge of strength and conditioning for the physical development and preparation of athletes, and practical sessions in the sport science laboratory, field and gym based settings providing opportunities to apply this knowledge in practice.

Topics may include:

  • Physiology of training
  • Anatomy and biomechanics for strength and conditioning
  • Monitoring athletes and workload during the training process
  • Strength and conditioning in injury prevention
  • Training Special Populations

Practical sessions on: - Workload monitoring e.g., GPS - Biomechanical assessment of strength and power - Injury screening methodologies - Contemporary training methodologies in strenth, speed and metabolic training

Excellent (Grade A) Work displays comprehensive knowledge and detailed understanding, reflecting extensive background study. The work is highly focussed, well structured, logically presented and with defended arguments. The work contains original interpretation and new links between topics are developed. The work is presented to a high standard with accurate communication and no factual or computational errors.

Good (Grade B) Work displays sound knowledge and understanding but with some limitations. There is evidence of background study. The work had a defined and logical structure but with some weaknesses in the way in which arguments are presented. There is some original interpretation and demonstration of links between topics. The work is presented carefully with accurate communication and few factual or computational errors.

Pass (Grade C or D) The work only demonstrates knowledge of key areas/principles and there is limited evidence of originality or of background study. The work contains some irrelevant material and weaknesses in structure. Arguments are presented but they lack coherence. The work contains factual/computational errors with little evidence of problem solving. There are weaknesses in the standard of the presentation and its accuracy.

Learning Outcomes

  • Communicate advanced theory and practice in an appropriate manner for a performance sport setting.

  • Interpret, critically analyse and adapt a strength and conditioning programme providing an evidence-based justification.

  • Practically coach advanced strength and conditioning techniques in a competent, safe and effective manner.

  • Reflect and review practical knowledge in advanced training methodology.

Students will be given a fictional case study of an athlete which includes information regarding their background and sporting ability, some initial testing and monitoring data and a 6-month periodised plan overview. Students will be expected to present and answer questions on: • An analysis of the athlete and interpretation of initial testing and monitoring data • An adaptation of the periodised plan with justification • An outline and justification of an adapted monitoring strategy for the athlete across the 6-month period
