About This Course
Underpinned by the latest development in women’s health, midwifery and maternity care, this exciting new programme will be of interest to qualified midwives.
This programme will challenge midwives to critically examine how they can work to optimise the childbirth experience of all women. There is a strong focus on the autonomous role of the midwife and how improvements in public health promotion, the provision of evidence based information and effectively supporting women’s decision making work together to optimise the childbirth experience.
There are a suite of post graduate certificates related to this MSc that may be of interest to nursing colleagues, as well as midwives.
The programme offers a flexible learning approach that aims to:
- Provide students with a rigorous framework for the development and synthesis of critical knowledge and skills to optimise the childbirth experience for women and their families.
- Facilitate students to further explore the public health role of the midwife in order to promote and maximise physiological birth.
- Develop the student’s understanding of research approaches within health and social care.
Students wishing to can exit the programme after achieving either a PG Certificate or PG Diploma, if they do not wish to undertake the full MSc.

Course Content
What will you study on this course?
During this MSc Midwifery Studies students will develop their in-depth knowledge and understanding of key elements of a midwife's role including:
- The public health role of the midwife
- How physiological childbirth can be promoted and maximised within contemporary maternity services.
- How the childbirth experience can be optimised for all women and their families.
- Research approaches within health and social care.
Students will develop a critically understanding of the midwife’s role in the improvement of health and well being and the skills needed to optimise the childbirth experience. Students will further develop their skills in working with and for women and communities to optimise the childbirth experience, promote and protect equality, diversity and the rights of individuals. Those progressing to the full MSc Midwifery Studies will also learn how to generate and interpret relevant research evidence and apply it in practice.
Graduates of this programme will have the ability to not only reflect on professional practice to enhance self-awareness and professional development but also the skills and knowledge base to critically analyse and evaluate maternity care provision in order to identify areas for development. They will be able to clearly demonstrate a critical understanding of health research and development and crucially be able to analyse, synthesise and appropriately apply evidence based information to practice and enhance the childbirth experience.
Assessment
There are a range of assessment approaches, including written assessments, presentations and a research dissertation.

Entry Requirements
For consideration for entry onto the programme, you should possess registration as a midwife in your home country with a degree classification of a 2(ii) or higher. Alternatively, possession of a suitable qualification and work experience will be considered. Students also need to provide evidence of some experience in adult health care, this could be observational in a care home for example.

Careers
In addition to equipping any midwife with additional knowledge and skills that would enhance his or her autonomy within practice, this programme will equip midwives with the necessary knowledge and skills required to seek employment opportunities at a senior level, for example: as a consultant midwife, practice development and leadership roles.
Research / Links with Industry
The academics involved with this MSc have extensive links with external bodies, which are fully utilised in ensuring that the modules are relevant to the modern work and research environment graduates will enter. They are also all experienced Midwives who still have active links to the local Health Board ensuring that modern clinical practice is embedded within the programme.

Admissions to the programme are made on a rolling basis, so early applications are encouraged. Applications are made using Bangor’s online application system.

When to apply
The University will accept applications throughout the year, but we would generally advise that you send in your application form by the end of June to ensure that you have time to make any funding and/or accommodation arrangements, and for documents such as transcripts and references to be obtained if not submitted with the application. This will also give you more time to meet any conditions we may potentially attach to an offer.
